Just to clarify, Ebola is a shortened name for the medical syndrome caused by Ebolavirus, which is a "genus" of related viruses. I put genus in quotes because technically viruses are not themselves life forms. However virologists need some way of classifying them so use the taxonomic tools at hand.

As I pointed out previously, there is scientific evidence that Ebola can be transmitted by airborne means and interspecies transfer also can occur. Since this information has come out governments have quickly hired their own "pundits" to give counterarguments and to try to assuage their constituents fears. However, you can't argue with the science itself.

It's interesting to see how these "hired guns" try to walk the fine line between service to their political masters and service to science.

"To suggest that Ebola could become airborne is completely irresponsible."

"To become airborne, Ebola would need to fundamentally change the way it grows. That is very unlikely in my opinion."

“There is no evidence that Ebola can spread via the air in the real world."

"Ebola can only be transmitted through the air under carefully controlled lab conditions."

See what they did here? They went from saying it was "completely irresponsible" to say that Ebola could become airborne to admitting that experiments in the lab show that it can do just that. To say that this is only under "carefully controlled lab conditions" is a bit disingenuous as all good scientists employ these and if it can occur in a lab then there is a good chance it also can occur somewhere in Nature.

I think a bit lf "scare" is just the thing to make people a bit more cautious. Saying that you can only get Ebola via direct contact with body fluids tends to make people think that they are safe when they may not be. Admittedly, Ebola may not be transmitted via common respiratory droplets but if someone with bleeding gums sneezes in a crowded room I'd not want to be in it.

Dude's a zombie! Burn it with fire!!! ;p

I have a conspiracy theory I haven't seen the news channels ask yet - that guy that flew into Dallas with Ebola, did he KNOW there was a good chance he was infected and came here because he knew he would get better treatment? Also, I'm sure he used the sink, toilet and bathtub/shower, did anything get flushed into the water system that others can catch?

Just read a few thousand soldiers from local Fort Carson are going to Africa to 'fight Ebola'. Will they bring something back? Likely. Again, will they contaminate the water system? Or, are they on some new, experimental drug to prevent infection?

I don't usually prescribe to conspiracy theories but all this leaves me with some what-if questions.

I just heard from a very reliable source last night that NJ is sending over a ton of materials to Liberia in order to start setting up some sort of infrastructure to help the NGO's. I was told they have been flying missions pretty much non-stop from Fort Dix/McGuire.
