Oz, wasn't there a crash in the same corner in the 90's that got a marshell?

That car appears to be under the crane. If so it's not hard to see how a head injury could have occurred, roll hoop or no. I hope his injuries are not too bad.

I have thoughts about silly season and the race but can't bring myself to type them in just now.

Nasty. even though it appears as the marshall was waving a green flag at the crash site, the electronic caution appears to have been activated if we were to assume the caution symbols on the FOM TV feed are interlinked with the caution / yellow signal that is broadcast to the cars.

The green flag was just after the crash scene , I know it looked like it was at the scene in the tv footage due to the camera angle but the waves double yellows would have been in the section leading up to the crash scene and then waved green immediately after the crash signalling the drivers could return to full speed

Top picture the car may be trapped under the rear of the tractor and judging by the tractor location in the second pictured compared to the first , the tractor pulled forward to expose Bianchi's car

Sutil said he aquaplaned off of Dunlop , presumably Bianchi did the same the next lap

What a series of unfortunate events. Everyone was in intermediates and it had started to rain hard again, plus it was getting late in the day so visibility was most likely also an issue. The safety car should have come out earlier.

That was my thought as well.

This is a freak event and I'm generally leery of going too far in terms of corrective action. But to continue along that line, the cars and drivers are well armored against impacts within the horizontal plane they race through. If cranes etc. had a soft barrier wrapped around them at that level the car's defenses might take care of the rest.

It's a damn good thing that the back of the tracktor is sloped up, otherwise it would have been even worse.

Not sure there is any room for Bianchi's condition to be " much worse "

He could have been decapitated. That seems much worse.

Man, why don't they use cranes, like Monaco does. They are never on the track...

Damn that's horrific, but thankfully the marshals weren't injured as well. Maybe the FIA needs to consider how they use these cranes to prevent this from happening again. Either that or modify the tub to include some sort of head protection for the drivers in addition to the roll hoop.

I think it was just unfortunate circumstances , I don't see how this could have been avoided by any precaution other than no recovery vehicles inside the track confines and that may not be feasible for financial and logistical reasons at many current circuits .

The only other option if they do decide to change recovery rules is a safety car every time a car is being recovered or there is debris on track that marshalls would normally deal with and that would pretty much mean 4-8 safety cars per race
