Is your rack mounted on the edge of the bed, or does it go into the bed?

 

It sits on top of the bed, but attaches to the bed rails... it's the only 2gen boxrocket rack Adam made. It uses the bed cleats to secure it to the rails.

Again, not mine... it belongs to a banned TW member who's letting me borrow it for the long weekend along with the RTT.

 

Ah. Gotcha. I've seen some posts about how putting too much weight on the top can cause the top to bend. Apparently, the top caps don't distribute the weight very well? I was asking because someone may let me borrow their RTT for a weekend and wondered if I had anything to worry about.

 

hmm... ya I've heard that too... The truck we pulled this rack and RTT off of seems to be doing fine.. been on there for a couple years and on multiple trips... His bedrails were loose though, so he tightened them up after we pulled the rack.

a rigid rack will not allow the bedsides to bend outward as some people have experienced. one with less than adequate legs will allow that. the problem is that some of the first people to experiment with bed racks for 2nd gens would build a rack that could support the needed weight, but did not take lateral loads well at all.

you can however, crush the plastic bed rail caps. i've found that tieing into the bed bolts is a much better sulution to supporting weight, than fixing separating bedsides.

Yeah, I'd stay away from anything that uses the bed rails for support. The bolts that hold the rails on also connect the fiber bed to the sheet metal fender. So you only have about six points of contact between the fiber and sheet metal.

 

So as long as the racks have metal plates that rest atop the bed caps, but are secured by the rails should be ok? At least for short term use, anyway.

 

That's waht I am going to do for my next rack, use the slide rail to just keep it in place but distribute the weight all over the bed side rail.

 

For short term use it will be fine. My bedrails are cracked from my old spare tire carrier, but that was a fatigue issue.
