Pretty much exactly what happened to me. It's in this thread somewhere. No one can tell me that's normal.

That's fine for the folks here. In case you may not know it, most Tacoma owners are not forum members. Besides, the most important safety feature on any vehicle is the braking system. The Tacoma braking system is not optimum by any means. Doesn't bother me too much with snow tires and tons of winter driving experience, but to suggest that it's ok for Toyota to have an ABS system this sensitive is not sensible.

The tires must be a huge influence. I don't run winter tires on my Cherokee and the ABS is sketchy but I run Duratracks on the truck and I love the winter braking and handling.

The ABS on my '05 would not allow me to use the brakes when crawling, and attempting to stop in snow. I installed the ABS Disable mod, which fixed the 4x4 ABS problem, but I experienced the same ABS problem in a panic stop on a dry road, resulting in my '05 being totaled!

I had a good experience. Just recently, I had to pull out a 93 Suburban up hill on a snowy/ice road. Before I turned around to help them I had to stop on the hill. The trucks ABS did go off a little but the truck stopped very well. Much better then the older Suburban. I do run Duratracs.

My tires were P265/70R16 Michlin LTX A/T 2 with more than 80% of the tread left. Braking worked extremely well in the panic stop until the speed dropped to 25 mph. I was told that this is the speed that the ABS system will kick in. It was like I was being pushed from behind (I wasn't) into the vehicle in front of me. I suspect that either the ABS failed, or the vehicle acceleration problem that I brought in under a recall wasn't fixed properly. My Taco only had 53K miles on it.

I had the same thing happen to me this winter! I was in a caravan going up to a ski mountain via an Icy mountain pass road when 3 vehicles in front of started slipping and spinning out. I was able to slow down slightly but once the ABS kicked in there was no stopping. It felt like the truck was actually gaining speed in a braking situation. It came down to less than a car length between me and the vehicle directly in front of me. I had to push the truck into the passenger side snow bank to get it stopped. There was no way the ABS would have done the job.

what is this recall you speak of?

My f150 was 10x as sensitive, used to go off all the time on bumps, ice, etc. Taco hasn't activated but more than once or twice...you guys need to slow down in the bad weather!

I have zero issues with abs in ice. Only time it comes on is if I try to lock up the brakes if I am pumping them ( like you should in ice in the first place ) it never activates ...

On the other hand when off road on bumps it annoys the shit out of me

Do you have an automatic trans? Do you put it in neutral when you want to stop? I have seen cars stopped at a light on icy road, with their rear tires churning away, trying to drive them forward into the intersection. PUT IT IN NEUTRAL WHEN YOU WANT TO STOP!!!

Mine is a '06 4.0L 4x4. It came with BFG Rugged Trail TA's, and you would be hard pressed to find a better tire for snow & ice. If I'd gotten the next upgrade, it would have come with Dunlops, and I guarantee you that they'd have been totally useless in snow & ice. But then again, one year I was trying to nurse through the winter with my BFG's being a little worn... not illegal, but definitely getting to the point of being 'done'. Almost got through the winter with no snow, but when it did, I beat feet right down to the tire dealer and got some fresh BFG Rugged Trail TA's put on. I'd found out how very bad wornout tires work in the snow...and ice.

One time I got stopped at a light next to a Jeep Cherokee that was all fitted out for OR...lifted, bumpers, camo paint, big tires. It was snowing and the roads were covered with compacted snow/ice. There were a bunch of cars behind both of us, and I wanted to get the heck away from all of them. I was already in 4H, but pushed the button for the electric rear axle locker. Light changed, the Jeep jumped up & down and went nowhere...I was gone! My rear locker does seem to work in 2H, as well.

Another time, it was August, and I was southbound on Hwy. 97 at dusk, heading toward Okanogan. Saw a doe standing on the shoulder of the road and I absolutely hammered the brakes. Gawd, it was like I threw out an anchor with a very short chain. Missed the venison by a foot or two at the most. I'm pretty satisfied with the brakes, as you might guess! :taco:

I have an 08 6-speed and I always shift into neutral when stopping hard.

There seems to be a lot of issues with the Taco ABS system. I would suggest that anyone who has experienced problems to file a complaint with the NHTSA. If they get enough complaints, they will investigate the problem. This could be a life-saving action! The complaint page is located at: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicl...nt/index.xhtml

    I've filed mine!

I have driven vehicles that were much more dangerous in the snow/ice. The experiences I have had with this truck on snowy mountain roads is awesome.

Toyota Tacoma 2005 4x4 access manual tranny. Just here to see if everyone else is having abs problems. Didn't notice it till about 130k, but same as below. randomly on dry roads no sand it will activate abs at slow speeds, causing me to blow through stop signs. I have spent a lot on new brakes, rotors, calipers, fluid change, same thing no matter what. Its starting to scare me a little. Guess I'll try pulling the fuse and testing the difference (I know I know not supposed to) but I'm at my wits end with this issue. Toyota dealership offered me a discount on new truck, smh. Typical bs answer from people who really just want your money and not safety.

Weird. Never had any trouble myself on dry roads. Most of people's issues are with snow and the ABS being to touchy. Could always do the ABS kill switch.

Just noticed at 130k? Seems like I'd notice blowing through a stop sign pretty quick.
