    I don't see $112 being a "ton" considering you have the piece of mind that the hitch is actually rated for towing and it's powdercoated. I suspect your cost will be greater than the one in this link by the time you buy the steel, bend it to shape, weld it up, and powdercoat.



    There are things I'll build, but the hitch isn't one of them. To each their own though. Good luck.

    Homemade hitches and draw bars are legal for use on public roads. There are no laws saying you can't make your own stuff. And any rating process is done by a certification company that has no affiliation with the government. They just take your $500, put X amount of weight on the hitch to classify it as a certain class hitch, and then you can call every hitch you build certified. There's a place down the road that does it, but I'm not spending $500 to have them tell me what I already know will work. I pull 6000 pounds with my homemade bumper perfectly fine.
