Should be fine then with Protech, at least. That is really terrible customer service.

    Are ProTech's made in US?

You might check with Whit at USAMadeBlade.com in the future. Stand up guy, personal approach to business ownership and he supports American makers. Not sure if he carries PT, but he might be able to get it so far as what manufacturers meet his American made business model.

Protech called me. The tech/builder hasn't seen a failure like this. I'm to send the knife to protech and they will send me out a new one. Curious to see what they say about the blade when they get it.

Yes, it's 154CM. What is the significance of that?

Seems like manufacturers have hard.time heat treating it. Benchmade has a fixed blade they make in 154CM and the name eludes me.. But a buddy of mine has broken 3 of them and not abusing them in the least, they fracture about 1/3 down from the tip and snap, all in the same place. Benchmade has made good on warranty replacements, but makes me question 154CM and heat treating issues causing blades to be way too brittle.

It was his Nimravus. He's now stationed in Texas, I'll see if I can find the video of one breakage. He finished splitting the wood piece with a $12 stainless Mora without problems.

So I got a Kershaw RJ2 today...was given to me by another cop who no longer wanted it because it has a little surface rust on the blade around the hinge and right inside the handle in the same area

Best option for cleaning it up?

Just discovered these on the web, I really really really want one now. They're a little pricey though. Made in Japan.

They have rust erasers you can pick up if you can reach the area or you can use vinegar, or Coca Cola.

some sort of soak would be best due to it being inside the liner...and being a spring assist...i'm hesitant to disassemble

I'd try Coca Cola. I haven't tried the vinegar myself, I know it cleans the rust off but I'm not experienced with it, not sure how it would effect your finish being that is vinegar is used as a forced patina method

I sprayed some rem oil and scrubbed what I could with a gun brush (not brass bristles) then wiped it down and sprayed a light coat of fluid film on it

    we'll see how it does
