Oh crap. It could have been delivered to the wrong address. Fell off of the back of the truck. Whatever.

The post office in my town is absolutely totally unreliable. I stopped using the usps years ago. Can't stand even walking in a post office. Either pay bills online, ship stuff ups. LOL the seller could be innocent!

Except for one thing ... If the seller blocked the buyer's phone then that doesn't make sense to me?

Gads, wouldn't it be hillarious if the OP's neighbor came back from vacation and said, "Yo, found this box on my back doorstep. Looks like it's yours?" I would laugh my arse off.

I've never heard of this and been using UPS for about a decade, daily. Thanks for the tip, I'm going to look into this today.

I believe the felony threshold is $800 in CA, but it could be $1000. It's definitely one or the other, don't feel like Googling.

Please note the seller was also selling his truck, so please don't do anything to his truck. It might have changed ownership and I don't want anything negative to happen to me as a result of this thread. I have only asked 2 members to make a call and that was to see if he was screening my call. Other than that I cannot take any responsibility for anyone actions. Please be respectful and let the authorities take care of this matter. He will get his due punishment.

Talked to my bank just now and the investigator is looking into the claim now. It was just assigned today, so I'm not sure when it will be resolved, but they are moving forward with it. I wanted to check in with them first before contacting the police, as long as I get my money back I'll be fine with this whole situation. I would love to press charges (and will if it comes down to it), but I really just want this in the past now. He will get his punishment in some form, but we will see how that works out. I will be calling the police today though to get opinions and the ball rolling on that end.

Makes sense to not involve the law so he keeps doing it

Prosecute him to the fullest extend of the law. Who cares about the money.....Stop this guy from doing this in the future or start him down his career path as a criminal.

Getting the money back will not teach him a lesson.

I'll talk with the police about my options and hopefully he will see more than probation.

In my experience if the victim is vocal and pushes for harsher punishment, it usually sways the judges ruling on sentence

    The better coast

    Probably

I hope no one who is pushing for the "full extent of the law" (not calling you out XXXX) has ever said "we need to quit putting people away for stupid stuff".

I am not saying nothing should happen to the seller, but I dont think any extended prison time should be given.

What I do think should happen (if this situation does turn out to be true) is the OP's money returned ofcourse, a police report taken, and put behind county bars for 96 hours. why?

Because 1: after 72 hours (I think 72?) you have to report it to employers (for 5 years after the fact I think)
2: the media always makes a news report about who was arrested each day.

Spending years in jail for a 1000$ scam? I think that's a bit over the top both in terms of time and money used on the OP's part, the state's part and everyone else involved.

Just because something is personal, or you know the victim, or you "know" the victim through the internet, doesnt be you cant come to a logical punishment and look at the bigger picture.

I'd say reimbursement, 200hrs community service, and 2 years probation would be appropriate.
Not saying its petty, but instances like this should not put people behind bars. Mainly for the reason that it costs the taxpayers money to house/feed/provide medical care for these people.
Take away their weekends, and put them to work making the community better.

If it's me, I care a lot more about my $1000 than any punishment handed down to DB.

But like the OP said, if it comes down to it he will press charges.

One thing to consider... and LEOs please speak up if I am wrong, but if you press charges and take him to court, then your name and information becomes public record on the motion.

Something you might want to think about considering this young kid is a douchebag fully capable of making stupid decisions.
