I understand what you're saying... but this $1000 scam may only be one of many.

For all we know he's scammed $100,000s off other innocents.

I can see this being sensible, however I would ask for maybe 500hrs community service. I've seen people get 100hrs for traffic violations. Myself included. Years ago in my "rice burner" days I had a civic that had the main 3 bolt ons and a lot of suspension work (I mean it was a slow civic but the suspension made it fun to drive). One night some friends and I were going to a restaurant that I've never been to before so I followed a friend. My friend was driving like a jack ass, weaving in and out of traffic with no turn signals and speeding. I followed in suit like an idiot and we both got pulled over for street racing. Even though we weren't I can see how the troopers would say we were. Anyways, I had to pay $600 in fees and court costs, 12 months driving probation meaning that if I got a traffic ticket in that time I would lose my license with possible jail time, and 150hrs community service. Basically had the book thrown at me while the girl before me went to the judge for her 3rd marijuana possession while on probation and still didn't have a job and was given a slap on the wrist and a 4 week extension on finding a job. Guess that's a different story though

^Yeah, but being stoned doesn't endanger other drivers unless she was driving, too. This kid/guy needs to be punished at maximum. He's a thief, and he's committed FRAUD! And he did it in TW...

You don't have to disclose anything to an employer unless they ask. Background checks are standard in almost all lines of employment. They will find out anyway. Most employers don't care unless it's a felony, fraud, or theft. So this on his record will affect him jail time or not.

Well.. for example of why I mentioned probation as a likely punishment (if there is one), is because fairly recently I had to deal with a person who committed 7 felonies (assault, grand theft, grand theft auto) within 13 days, was arrested 2 times for them, violated court terms which allowed him release instead of jail time, and broke into my sister's apartment and smoked crack in her bathroom while PD was outside and ADT alarm was going off (they left because they couldn't get entry into the apartment and crack smoker closed all the blinds so they couldn't see any reason to force entry), and was arrested 2 times possessing stolen items, crack and associated items to smoke it.

All of his felonies were taken to court and lowered to misdemeanors or written off completely, and throughout the process he had a restraining order against him, which didn't have any effect to the judge to have such a recently decorated douchebag racking up felony arrests, drug use, assaults, and theft in such a short period of time that maybe he shouldn't be out on the street. Every time he left court he was instructed to go to his aunts house, directly and remain there as part of his conditional release. He never stayed there or showed up there, except one time to steal all of her car keys (4 vehicles) and her purse and later was arrested at a casino with her $60,000 truck completely smashed to oblivion on the exterior (3 hit and runs while he had it for 4 days) and the interior was destroyed as well. She had $1600 cash that was in the truck so we assumed he was tearing it apart and looking for more, he was also drunk and had opened bottles of wine in the cab along with more crack. He was arrested because when he turned into the casino parking lot he hit a car that was leaving, and kept going. So that driver turned around and followed him into the casino while on the phone with the police.

OP, wanted to let you know that I am envious of your discipline. Good on you for being able to maintain a level head. Many including myself may not have shown as much as you. Even at my ripe age of 45 I still have little patience for dirtbags and scum, very little.

    Agree

True, this is one of the top reasons more criminals are not prosecuted in a court of law. Victims feel vulnerable to retaliation .
Although, if the local police and DA feel that the crime fits a specific threshold, prosecution can continue without victim cooperation.

    I like this post.

Should it be proven true, then I totally agree that it depends on the big picture. Is it mostly due to stupidity and some kind of desparation? Or is it only cause the guy is a psycopath and doesn't care about how he hurts others?

I've seen people argue for maximum punishment for minor crimes until it happens to someone in their family. Then they are crying like little babies about how unfair the law is and lawyering up to the max.

Different paths, different punishments. It aint one size fits all.

I think the best punishment when they catch this dipshit is to obviously give OP back his money.

For punishment I think community service would be the best thing. He's clearly not a career criminal if he has fucked this up so badly. No reason to put it on his record and ruin his chance to get a decent job 10 years from now. He's a piece of shit now but maybe he can turn his life around :notsure:

For him. I spent 30 days sleeping on a couch with a handgun. He showed up in the middle of the night one night, and I heard him walk across the roof to the rear slider door. My nightmare was that he'd show up and be off his mind and I would have to protect our safety with deadly force, and thank God he showed up and took off when I made my presence known.

Right just remember he screwed you out of $1k(+?). This is premeditated, no one in their right mind would set up such a screwed up price. He knew what he was trying to do, also let's not forget he changed all his TW info purposely.

Like I said I got my first gen s/c alone for $1k. Unless this guy was in such a hurry to get rid of this stuff it wouldn't make any sense. Math isn't his strong suit.
