Not to interject, but please take note of my recent experience with the California judicial system a few pages back. I'd bet all the pennies OP got scammed out of that this kid will have no lasting negative effects as a result of this entire thing.

FWIW, if you're an adult and you make an adult choice to commit an adult crime, you get all of the adult consequences. Lots of people fuck up when they're young and they become wonderful contributors to society in their lifetimes. The only thing that limits people are their own ideals and morals, if you're never driven to rise above then you never will. This goes for everybody, felons included. Recidivism in the US has more to do with our lack of justice and proper people management in the justice system than it does with anything else, also IMO.

California far prefers to provide assistance to non-violent criminals than they do to incarcerate them. Our jails are massively overfilled, we don't have room to lock up 22 year olds who internet scam $1000. Even if he was jailed, unless he has priors that conclude him to be a risk of injury to others while incarcerated or is prone to violence he'll be sent to a small municipal jail with low risk offenders like him. He certainly won't be in a prison, and certainly not around "hardcore" criminals. Don't be confused by conjecture.

This is a bit out of date but it shows the the highest recidivism rates are from people who commit theft.
    http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/rpr94.pdf

That kind of makes sense because who would be out stealing cars/breaking into houses when they have a legitimate job? If you have been thrown into prison with "real" criminals and once your out people won't hire you because of back ground check what can you do? It's pretty clear 3/4 of people continue breaking the law. How would providing more rehabilitation and maybe some training in a trade hurt?

It's not like every countries recidivism rate is that high either.
    http://www.salve.edu/sites/default/files/filesfield/documents/Incarceration_and_Recidivism.pdf

52% doesn't seem like that much of a difference but keep in mind how massive the prison population is. Going off of 2010 numbers if you drop the recidivism rate to UK levels (-8%) that's 181,346 less people in prison who go back every 3 years or something.

Idk I really don't think it's about lazyness I think it's systemic issues.

People get so hung up on punishing people they end up creating a revolving door where people end up stuck in the system. I mean the US prison population has doubled since 1985 and now has 5% of the world population and 25% of the world prison population. Something really isn't working imo.

Well a lot of the time, when people commit crimes (and are not punished for doing so) they will continue to commit crimes. So let them continue to break the law, or punish them? Seems pretty clear to me.

I never said just let him go on his merry way.

Make him pay back OP, do a few hundred hours of community service and probation so if he does do something slimy again he gets locked up and then gets a criminal record.

From what I have read Canada's prison population is also growing out of control among many of the same problems American prison's faced.
I think we can agree there are problems with not only these systems but, arguably with prisons systems across the globe.

Imo it comes down to criminal activity. Stop it and our problems lessen.

Canada's system isn't perfect either for sure.

I think the best way to address societal problems like these is to treat the root cause. It's like trying to kill a weed by ripping off the top. You can rip it off until the end of time but it will keep popping back up. Imo just being hard on crime is like ripping off the top.

You still have the root cause creating people who are more likely to be criminals. When people have no opportunities for whatever reason they are much more likely to commit crimes like these.

Making them pay amends to the community through community service and then training them in some form of trade so they can get a reasonable source of income is the best way to cut down on crimes like this imo. Give them something to live for and they won't throw away their lives to break into cars/scam people on TW.

If they are a repeat offender though then throw the book at them.

I forgot that state has RETARDED laws that the citizens voted in. I take back my comment. I forgot you guys send people to jail for life for shit like this if this is their third strike.

I am not for sending non-violent offenders to jail for any crime unless sexual in nature.

Here if he was a first time offender he would get a slap on the wrist and maybe probation at the most.

This thread was created by the OP to get advice and possible assistance dealing with a potential scam.

Pretty sure he didn't create it to provide a forum for random posters to get into a political debate.

Show respect for the OP and keep it salient.
