Dealer told me the same thing, couple days ago i called service to see if doing my own oil changes messes with the warranty and also i dont wanna go 10k between oil changes, and the service guy told me tacomas dont have synthetic anyway, so i guess the sales people were wrong.

If you have the 4.0 Liter V6 it isn't. Or shouldn't. Are you sure that it is?

    Toyota says this:
Do what you will, after all it is your truck. But we were discussing the requirement set by Toyota which I have posted in the link above.

True, but, if the high school kid changes it and the motor blows or something, its still the dealers fault. If i do it, they will try and find a way to say it was my fault and they arent responsible. Plus my local toyota is fairly close and i know most of the techs so im pretty cool about taking it to them.

It is, I'm sure because it is on the top of the engine.

Then again, they use different spark plugs in the same engine. Why? Because it is what they have in their hand when the engine comes down the line and is installed. They all work the same in the end and Toyota says it is acceptable.

I changed mine at 4500 or so and sent it to Blackstone Labs. It came back full of metal, but they said that was normal break in wear and that subsequent samples would show much less and eventually be normal after break in.

    Sounds legit to me.

Do we really have to get in to the "oil change interval debate" again? We only have 2 dozen threads about this already.

Apparently US trucks have the "MAINT REQ" light. It flashes at about 4500 mi. Steady on at 5000mi. depending on where it was reset last. It's not a GM using a fancy algorithm to turn on the light. Toyota must think those of us in the US are to busy to remember to change our oil. lol

At the dealership the old guy probably changes oil. If they are paid flat rate a oil change probably gets 1-1.5hrs. It's easy and he can do it in 20min. Translation: he's making $70/hr. doing oil changes.

    Hi all.

1 - The 1GR-FE comes from the factory with 5w-30 dino.
2 - My manual says services every 8,000 km or 6 months - whichever comes first.
3 - I got 4 free oil changes from the dealer.

1a - I switched to full synthetic on the first service and will continue to use it for the life of my truck
2a - I did the first service at 1600 km. I don't care what anyone says about 'no need to do the first oil change early or that there is no need for a proper break in'. My engines all get a proper, staged break in and the metal filings removed long before the 'required' time or distance. After the first service the time parameter comes long before the distance one. Some services had only 2500 km at 6 months - I still did a full synthetic change.
3a - I do all my own services - always have. I would need to double check so many things if I let the dealer do it, I might as well did it myself anyway.

    Cheers
    Ray.

You do make a good point there, the only decent point I've heard about taking it to a dealer.

As an aside, on your engine oil cap it should tell you exactly what oil to use. You can follow the recommendations based off the oil type it suggests.

I understand. But in my maint manual, it states 10k mi. Just going by black and white from the manufacturer.

The thing is, they print one thing one day and change their mind for one reason or another later on and print another thing.

Mine says 0-W20 full synthetic on the oil cap and in the manual.
