I wonder if that was some kind of attempt at a boot slide mod

Thanks for coming back and reporting the result.

It's no fun when folks post up problems and then go away and sort it out one way or another and never tell us what happened in the end.

Interesting thought. I also do not see evidence of a lot of grease having come out, nor does it look like it is loose enough to allow a whole lot of gunk to get in. Is the boot torn somewhere else? At any rate I'm looking forward to pics of the insides.

Glad you got that figured out. I would look at the other CV since that one you pulled out is a special student.

All these people acting like they haven't used zip ties for a quick, questionable fix must not break shit.

I have stainless hose clamps on my boots. No special crimp tools needed and they're reusable.

No doubt. A hose clamp is the best route.

We are also all giving the OP the benefit of the doubt here. He said the truck hasn't been abused, yet the OEM clamp somehow came off and a zip tie was used to replace it.

I'm not saying the OP is at fault, but how many threads on TW are posted like this one and the OP doesn't own up to his own mistakes or operator errors.

But seriously OP check the other boot if you had no prior knowledge of the zip tie on the boot you replaced.

I bought it used, as I'm cheap. It had 70k km's on it (40k miles), no modifications whatsoever. I guess I can't say, definitively, that it wasn't abused, but there were no overt signs of abuse or negligent 'repairs' (until now) and I'm pretty discerning when it comes to buying vehicles. I've never touched the CV until now; if I ever have to do a field repair like this, you'd better believe I'd do a proper repair the second I got the truck back to civilization. Take the fact that I spent nearly $600 on a new, Toyota CV and diff seal instead of going with a shitty $80 rebuilt or aftermarket CV as a sign.

The other boot is fine; all factory metal clips are in place and there's no signs of leakage.
