Mine had a good amount of surface rust when I first bought it, and I tired to fix it on my own ( canned undercoat), and it didn't even last one winter. I then had the truck's frame sandblasted and undercoated by a local company (Auto Rust Technicians). If you want to,I made my own thread on how it turned out: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/north-east/330769-frame-coating-auto-rust-technicians.html

Also, it seems like most people get rot in the box section of them frame, where two sheets of metal are joined together.

Do these easily pop out without damaging them so I and reuse or they one time use plugs??

To me, it seems like you would break the plug in half if you try to take them back out. I think it is a one time use deal.

Edit: I tried to take out one plug when I coated the inside the frame with Fluid Film, but I had no luck, and I heard a slight crack, so I stopped right there, not wanting to break it.

    Others can add to this if there is more info ... But, From what I gleaned from the threads and Toyota;

    - Officially, Toyota says they made changes to the frame. Exactly how, what and when, to my knowledge, has not been officially stated.

    - It looks, to me, that 2014 + is the safest bet.

    - One comment I got from a Toyota rep was that all frames rust and especially in the snow/salt belt. Yes, Toyota has issues some recalls/service campaigns of some of their vehicles - But Toyota IS Standing behind the issue, doing past buy backs, Frame inspections/ coating and replacements for vehicles that are getting quite older..

    But who knows ...

sorry to hi-jack but its on topic so does anyone know/think if this would constitute a new frame? Took these last night after receiving my letter in the mail. Both areas by right and left cats.

i understand their point, but a i think Toyota should understand that a 10 year old or less truck should not have the frame issues that they are having.

my neighbor has a 1990 chevy silverado, the frame on that truck looks to be about the same condition that mine is in right now. BUT that truck is also 15 years older and had 15 more years of winter exposure.

at this point i wouldnt care if i had to replace the bed from the bed rusting away, thats a heck of a lot easier to fix than a rotting frame lol

I will say yes, if I were you, before I would take it in for inspection I would take a hammer and bust thru the rust to make a visible hole. Your frame looks to be about to cave at the one rust point, if that is fact the rusted steel should just about fall out.

This is EXACTLY what mine looks like right now, I hit it with a hammer, and it just isn't all the way through yet. I am going to hold off on taking it in for inspection since we have until 2016 for the replacement.

i thinking of doing the same - gives my local dealer more time to practice the removal/installation of new frames on others....

Thanks for the info. What worries me is I park on a gravel driveway that takes forever to dry up and traps moisture half the year. The other half I park on a sand /dirt driveway 5 houses from the ocean, talk about a salty environment.

I have an 02 Dakota and the frame is rock solid, just surface rust. Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect and I had to replace my brake lines and tranny lines but I'd rather do that than a whole frame. After reading through this whole thread I'm real hesitant about pulling the trigger on the Tacoma.

I need to take a better look at my frame today, lots of surface rust but haven't checked for how bad it really is. I don't live in any of the states listed but, looking at the service records on the Toyota owners site, it spent the first 98k of it's life in VA/MD, which are on the list. I just crossed 100k last night.

I checked my vin on Toyota.com & it didn't come up. Mine is an 06, originally an Indiana truck. The outside of the frame is covered with surface rust & pretty much every weld & bolt underneath is a rusty mess. I need to crawl underneath and check by the cats since that seems to be the trouble area.
