The new lens is better, but still not what I would expect out of L glass. Maybe I just had high expectations, but I would think it should be better than both of my other lenses and it isn't.

I'm not sure what you mean by better.

Having laptop issues at the moment but the couple I looked at seem sharp. Maybe a bit under exposed.

Do you have any filter? What are your focus settings?

reasons expensive glass is better than kit glass:

    1. faster, and much faster for bokeh (mild price hike to big price hike)
    2. sharper at wider apertures, which usually produces more pleasant bokeh (big price hike)
    3. modern coatings so you can shoot into the sun, or resist lens flare, or produces better contrast, colors, etc (mild price hike to big price hike)
    4. weather sealing (mild to big price hike depending on range)
    5. weight (varies)

so I think I listed the common reasons most people buy new glass.

I also would like to know, what glass did you buy to replace your existing glass, and what were you looking for in terms of improvement?

Only the first 8 shots are with that lens. The others are either 10-22 or my 18-135.

By better I meant sharper. When I first got this one I was testing it just like I did the other one, and the image still shifts left when the IS starts, but it is a much smoother shift and doesn't snap back when it stops.

It came with a filter on it, I didn't even think to take it off, I don't remember the brand either. I'll look at it when I get home.
