Good Drum sets

What are some good brands for a beginner/intermediate?

Its not a bad kit for a beginner but it only comes with the shells. No heads or hardware. I would go to a music store like guitar center or sam ash because you can haggle the price you might be able to get a better kit for around the same money I used to be a manager at the guitar center here in Georgia.

 

Spend a few extra $$$ on this Tama and you'll love it.You won't have to upgrade as fast........if at all over the next few years.

What your saying is that I would just buy the drum shells its self.... no drum skins(??) or a throne? Or cymbals?

A little bit pricey, but its a great set.

 

Most drum kits usually just come with the shells no cymbals,stands,heads,hardware, and throne. If you want everything look for one that comes with everything you will need.

Good kits are Tama, Pearl,Gretsch, and DW. Plus look at what material wood species they are made out of each kit will sound different.

 

Take a look at the Pacific line for a good beginning drum kit. They are designed/made by DW. They are very affordable. I believe the most bang for you buck in the $600 range.

If your limit is $300 I would get this kit: Pacific Z5
and the spend the extra on a hardware pack.


I have only been playing a few years and recently sold this set. It was a Pacific set from 2005. All Birch wood shells and virgin bass drum. I am now saving for a new one.

 

Can you find an example?

And what is the best neutral wood. Like Ill have double kickers and hit on it pretty hard

 

Yeah I like the electric sets. and Ive played a few.... I just dont get the same feedback as regular drums.


Plus their very expensive

 

I had a Pearl Export series that I bought in middle school and played all the way thru college...Used it for school musicals, garage band shows, just playing around, writing some music....Was able to build onto it and make it a pretty nice kit.

That's the nice part- if you can find a set of shells you like- you can get anything from there. I've used about 6 different brands of sticks, at least a dozen types of drums heads, and for a while I had 4 pedals...one was a Tama iron cobra, and then i had the old stuff that came with the kit, and some other stuff that i picked up at yards sales and stuff.

 

I just recently bought the TD-9 kit for my studio.I do not use it's onboard sounds..........I use the kit to trigger my Superior drummer 2.0 software via midi with amazing results.

 

I used to play drums for many years, the new sets can be good but usually they do NOT come with cymbals. I would highly suggest going used because usally they will be sold with cymbals, I would suggest getting something that has a crash cymbal and a ride cymbal. It also must have the basic snare drum, bass drum, and high hat. If it comes with mounted toms and a floor tom even better!

I would never suggest anyone starting out on an electric drum set, start out right on a real drum set.
I'm suggesting a used set because many people quit playing drums and they wasted their money buying a new one. If you buy used it's no big deal if you stop playing and you can sell it for a little less than what you got it for.

I started out playing when I was about 13 on a used pearl drum set and it was a full set with all the cymbals and drums for about $300.00. It was 350.00 but my dad talked them down.
There are many good brands like Gretsch, Pearl, Tama, DW, just to name a few.

 

I have been playing for almost 20 years.
Look to buy local and buy used. DO NOT start on an electric set.

I like Ludwig, DW (collarlock is a DW spin off that is nice), and Yamaha.
Look for a 5 piece (Bass, 3 toms, and snare).

If you're serious about playing for a long time, invest in nice hardware or you will end up replacing it anyway. I recommend Gibraltar and DW, however you can find generic hardware that is usually okay.

Use cymbals can be decent, but if you buy used cymbals, stick to the name brands like Zildgian, Sabian, and Paste. Even their lowest lines are okay and pretty cheap.

Get a set of headphones to protect your ears. This will save your ears in the long run.
