i am with you on this.

the amount of sealant that you have to keep adding actually increase the rotational mass.

i have not found any trail riding that i don't get squirrely running 30 or below. i can def feel when i am at the limit with 31, in a corner.

we have tons of rocks here and pinch flats are completely gone.

i have actually gotten my nuts pounded by running low pressure in rocky terrain. if you don't have the momentum, in a rock garden, that tire compression will stop you in a split second.

I can't think of any areas where I need low tire pressure. So I guess I'll stick to tubes.

good info... but with a quote like this is surely isn't unbiased

""Going tubeless" is not worthwhile if you're basically a gutter-bunny who occasionally ventures onto smooth dirt trails. "

Most of the riders I've met here in socal are pretty split on them, and its mostly the XC/29er set that think tubeless is the ONLY answer

As for needing a spare or a boot, I prefer just carrying a tube if you do flat out a tubless....

And you don't NEED them if "you do anything close to agressive riding".... people have been hucking 25' plus drops and bombing downhill with insane speed long before tubeless.
If your pinch flatting ALL the time, some of that is technique...

I've been riding bikes for 30 years and never have I been in a situation that I wished I didn't have to deal with tubes. Maybe only had a hand full of flats in that time. I do want to try them but will always have a set or two of spare tubes in my pack. Only takes a minute or two to change so I can't say that I will see much of an advantage.

Looks like it's personal preference. As far as I'm concerned, I'd NEVER go back to riding tubes. No thanks. I used to get pinch flats every once in a while, you cant avoid them. I haven't had one flat since riding tubless this season and have ridden over a 1000 miles. There is something to be said about that.

Anyone ride at night? Now that the days are getting shorter, I decided to get a light and that way I can ride into sunset on my afternoon rides. I've never ridden with a light or at night so I'm kind of nervous about doing that for the first time.

I've rode at night as a kid. Would eat shit all the time but wasn't using a light. Jumping is real scary as your depth perception is not all there. It's fun though and adds a certain element to riding. We used to play tag at night with our bikes at schools. Nothing like getting t-boned at night in the middle of a school hallway.

tubeless since 2010 and have had one stop because of a large thorn that was too big for the sealant to work "on the fly"....stopped and rotated the hole to the bottom, hit it with the CO2...done

other than bringing them up to pressure before a ride, the tires only get touched when i change them.

i was a definitely a skeptic. i had even bought a tubeless wheelset to try and eliminate rim tape and spoke hole flats.
it was not until i had a ride that forced me to patch a tire 4 times in 2 hours that finally convinced me to try it out.

I have only ridden at night twice...but holy crap that is a new experience.
a trail you are familiar with becomes brand new at night.
your speeds will be much slower and obstacles look much bigger....fun

I have a Magic Shine light - got it on Amazon.
You can spend a lot more, but I really like the MS.

Also, try helmet mount and handlebar mount. I tried helmet mount, but the lack of angle between the light and my eyes made everything look really flat, it killed my depth perception. I switched to handlebar mount, and I have better depth perception but the light shakes around a bit.

I ride with both a handlebar and helmet light. Helps a lot.

    ^ yep
helps with the casting of shadows and depth perception.

that being said ive always found some of the fun of night riding was being forced to rely on your other senses a bit more

I have found riding stuff at night makes you better riding same stuff during the day. Riding at night makes you notice every feature of the trail and then riding in the day it is like it is etched in your mind and allows you cut loose all autopilot-like..............

I ordered a Serfas TSL-1000 light that was on closeout, since I'm not ready to spend $300+ on a light if I don't know if night riding will be a something I'll end up enjoying.
Apart from crashing, my concern is that I'll slow to a crawl on the trail at night (I'm already slow during the day) and that will be super frustrating. I'm not out to be the fastest, but I don't want to feel like I could hike the trail faster than I can ride it.

You'll be OK. It's like a whole other experience riding at night. Very cool stuff. Check your PMs................

Watch out for wildlife though. I was jamming down the flume trail around dusk and a few deer crossed in front of me and then a huge buck stopped on the trail and just watched me get closer and then finally moved. Lucky it wasn't a bear.

Luckily no bears anywhere around my area, but a small pack of deer do inhabit the park where the trails are at. Other than that, just the occasional hare and squirrel encounter.

Ha, I tried that and the combination of the lights was kind of disorienting. I have problems with inner ear stuff sometimes though.

I've encountered bears, moose, coyotes and a bison in my way on some of my mtb adventures...

Night riding is awesome! On last one we had a porcupine on the trail. (Tubeless vs tube? :D)
