Coca Cola will actually sue your bar/restaurant if you're found to be serving other brands to customers when they ask for "coke" without telling them that you don't sell Coca Cola product, ie if someone says "jack and coke" and you have Pepsi Co, you need to say "Jack and pepsi."

There's an assumption on the customers behalf that they're getting a Coca Cola, whether it's RC, Pepsi, or Dick's Dick Water, and Coca Cola (company) is really hard nosed on protecting themselves and their product reputation. They WILL sue you for serving whatever it is you sell under the "coke" name, even if in reference like Jack and coke.

FWIW, "cola" is all encompassing and a universal name for soda. Coke is a trademarked name by Coca Cola Company.

But it's slang, right? Cola IS a flavor, but also used across the line in a slang like coke is, I guess. Regional differences maybe, like "pop" and whatever else people say.

I worked for a company previously that was long time ago involved in a lawsuit with Coca Cola, and spent almost 7 years in the beverage/service industry managing that company. I believe it was a trademark infringement thing (jack and coke reference), but this all happened before I started working there so

 

The DCSB version I've seen still looks pretty long.
