Don't do it in direct sunlight, don't be afraid to use lots of water (DO NOT get the backing wet!) the backing is different from the top transfer tape.

    Good luck!

What's the reasoning behind not doing it in direct sunlight?

    Vampires.

Nah, Heat from the sun will make the water dry up real fast and you won't be able to move the decals as freely as long. Plus hot metal/paint isn't fun to work on.

I'll watch the videos again, but I assume it's easy to distinguish?

Don't I peel the backing tape off before I spray water anyway?

    Gotcha.

It was a stupid question because there is only one way to line up the driver's side hood decal

The side with the grid = back

I'm lining it up now and see that the top edge of the "J" stripe, that is closest to the windshield, does not have the same line as the edge of the hood. Now that I examine Kona's pic in the OP is looks like he has a bit of body color showing between the edge of the "J" stripe and the edge of the hood. I'm trying to avoid that. I might just pull the decal further up the hood towards the windshield so that is overlaps a tiny bit.

I'm also trying to figure out how to make all the side edges (closest to the fender) line up evenly with the body line running down the hood. Seems like the decal wants to taper towards the inside of the hood preventing a straight line down the "gutter" of the hood line.

Does any of this make sense or am I just babbling like a mo-ron?

the part closest to the windshield is supposed to overlap, otherwise, you would have to trim it on the vehicle....and you do not want to take an X-acto to the vinyl while it is on the vehicle.

the hood stripes line up with the "dip" in the side of the 2005- hood and the inside edge should be straight front to back (see image below)

Thanks Sock, that is very helpful.

I'm just not feeling the lines of the 1st gen hood decal (compared to the 2nd gen).

I like how the 2nd gen's innermost edge is straight down and not tapered a lot like the 1st gen. See Monte's old truck for reference:

Well Monte is... umm... special.

I was looking at Kona's build and like the lines of his much better. I know these pics are taken at different angles so it's hard to compare but I really want to accomplish the look of Kona's on my truck.

I'm assuming Kona's decal is the same exact as the one I just received? His seems less wide and less long. "Squattier" if you will. Which I like.

Or am I just over thinking this (like usual)?

Now that I'm looking at the decal I received compared to Kona's they do look considerably different.

The space between each segment on my seems to be larger (eg bigger gap) than Kona's and the angle of the taper seems to be greater on mine compared to Kona's.

    Is this possible?

Sorry to be such a PITA but I just want to do this correctly. Here are pics of how I have it lined up much the same as Kona (the outermost edge of the decal lined up with the "gutter" line of the hood).

It looks like Kona's is much more compact and not nearly as tapered. It looks like mine angles away from the center of the hood much more. It looks like the gap between each segment on mine is larger than on his. And the bottom two segments on mine look very angled compared to his.

Does this seem right or are the angles of the pics of his truck and mine just playing games with me?
