Sliders substituting for winter weight??

Rain and ice...nearly frictionless.

 

In my experience the weight hurts with stopping, but helps with taking off. Back to kinetic and static.

 

With weight can come more traction but its sometimes better to achieve winter traction instead via increased friction.

With more weight in back and winter tires, a 4WD truck will oftentimes do quite well in the snow. However, a front-wheel drive car with studded tires can do better on ice than a four-wheel drive without. In the mountains of Oregon I've seen mothers in mini vans deliver their progeny to the slopes with no problem while jeeps sat at the bottom of the hill spinning all four tires.

My daughter lives in Anchorage. She has 4 studded snow tires for her Subie. She can go anywhere.

 

Prior to starting a stream survey one Spring, I went out with a saw and come-along to cut up and move any downed trees so I could get the vehicles in later. The road had had a couple feet of snow on it still and I was somewhat impressed with the abilities of my chained-up '87 4x4 Toyota pickup. That is, until a girl in a Subaru Outback passed me. When I finally got to the turnaround area she was parked there and out jogging with her dog like she blazed trails every day.

 

Was she or the Dog carry extra weight for traction..and, or for stopping efficacy....
