    Gotcha

Well no matter what you come up with... If it is as good as your bars it will be nice! Good luck with your design!

I would love to have this setup for a spare tire. I would want to mount it upside down though so I have the top of the basket for stuff.

Like the idea, like the bars/basket but after shipping what's the grand total? I have a similar set up and I'm at $200 total

Unless he can work some black magic (voodoo pun), I don't see it being below $200. I know he'll correct me if I am wrong but that basket requires a lot of time on the plasma/laser table, numerous operations on a press brake, and if it is welded fully at each point where the steel meets, a lot of weld time. Plus powder coat and shipping. It'll be fairly heavy and bulky to ship, I don't see it nesting to well on a sheet of steel so you'll have a good amount of extra steel that you pay for that will get trashed.

Not knocking the design in any way and I am a huge fan, but I can't see how it'll be profitable which is why everyone makes them out of wire and tube.

To keep the size of the shipping box down, this will be made from five pieces, and bolt together. It would be shipped as a kit with all hardware (zinc plated with nylock nuts).

There will be two bends per piece. My guys could knock out the brake press work quick and make 10 of these in under an hour. Welding is to expensive, so I try to avoid it.

Price will be well under $200.

I stand corrected. I was going off of the picture you have which shows it not being bolted together. So yes, numerous pieces bolted together would be much more efficient and easier to ship.

Not everyone likes or wants wire & tube..... i like the design. I remember when Con-Fer was the only game in town for a "basket" like that.

I would say keep developing the design and make a proto-type... Most people would love to see a picture of the real product.

Not everyone is looking for rock-bottom prices; Some of us want quality Made in the USA products that are not the same as every other manufacturers.....

    Just my 2¢

I like the basket too and was not knocking the design, just giving my input. My main concern is the "floor" of the basket being weak because of the multiple slots. I know the brackets across the bed will help but the sections of steel that are running across the basket floor with no support will be weak unless the floor is made from a fairly heavy gauge. This is only a concern if you have something heavy in the basket, that has a small foot print. If it is heavy and as big as the basket then the weight is distributed evenly and it is fine. This is why most baskets are tube and wire. Tubing will handle a much heavier load with less deflection than a flat piece of steel.

EDIT: I am sure I am coming off as an asshole and it is what it is. I am in no way trying to sound like one. I am simply trying to help a fellow designer in simple flaws or oversights that he might not have thought about. I do like that basket, more than the wire and tube ones, but I am concerned that it'll not be as strong as a tubed design. Might not be a big deal, not sure how much weight people really put in these things. I would think the heaviest would be a spare tire.

This was just a rough draft. I'm working on the refined version right now, and also working on a sixer.

I, for one, love the idea. AND if you do ever decide to produce and sell, I'll be in line for one and some bed bars, I've always had my eyes on the bed bars and tailgate cap, wonder if you could do some sort of package deal? ;) Sub'd for updates though!

I'd say it could handle just about anything you could throw in it.
