Can I add a fifth TPMS to a 2011?

First off, sorry if this has been answered a million times. I've searched and couldn't get the answer to this exactly.

I have a 2011 TRD Sport Access. I recently upgraded my suspension and wheels, and got larger tires.

I'm in the process of replacing the crappy spare -- which is now smaller than the other tires, in addition to being rated for only 50 miles at 50mph -- with one that matches my new wheels and tires.

The current spare does not have a TPMS sensor, but I know some of the earlier trucks did. If I order a fifth for the new spare, can the computer handle it or is it limited to just four now?

    Thanks very much.

You should be able to. My '09 has five slots in the computer, but only has four sensors (and thus four codes programmed).

Ha. I have a 2011 and I know the answer for sure because I added a fifth TPMS sensor into the spare that I rotate through.

The answer is: yes and no.

You can HAVE five TPMS sensors. However, the 2011 can only have FOUR ACTIVE at one time. So, every time I have my tires rotated, I have to have a TPMS reset so that the computer knows about the four sensors that are on the tires that are on the ground.

I have some funny conversations with the techs doing the rotation.

Me: Please reset the TPMS sensors now that you've rotated the tires.
Tech: Don't need to do that, but I'll do it if you insist.
    Me: Please do.
Tech (starts walking around programming in sensors)
Me: No - don't scan that one - that's the spare.
Tech: "It's gonna insist that I add in that fifth sensor."
    Machine: "beep. sensors accepted."
Me: Yeah, you would on a 2009, but not on a 2011.

Too many to list. See build page. Link in signature
Soooo, on my 2009 it WILL accept 5 active sensors at the same time then even though it came with only 4?

Thanks for that very specific information, bjmoose. That's a little frustrating. The spare is arguably the only one I care about having a sensor on.

You can have one on the spare if you give up having one on one of the four tires on the ground.

I think I'd trip over my OCD if I did that.

I will assume this to be same on a 2014? Anyone know for sure I would like to add a 5th sensor and have it work.

I want a TPMS on my spare for 5-tire rotations as well. Assuming the same is true for my 2013, is it possible to reset the TPMS sensors at home, or does this require expensive shop tools/electronics?
