Hey jw what thoughts were for a good all around setup, needs to handle some weight tho. i was wondering how well a bilstein 5100/ ome 886/ ome leaf pack would fly? planning for camper shell, drawer system, auxiliary fuel tank and a roof rack for the kayaks and what not. possibly an a/t trailer on long hauls. thanks for valuable opinions.

and what is the real stigma about the bilstein 5100? its like they are worshipped on some threads and trolled on others, they seem like a well made, affordable product w/ some versatility?

To me, they're still for looks but better than the spacer lifts. For overlanding I would want coilovers 100%. Also, if you're set on the 5100s get eibach springs. If you want 886s get ome nitro charger shock. Pick one; don't mix and match

Ive had the 5100s on two trucks. They are great but if you plan on a long bumpy trip with a lot of wieght the icons will perform much better. I have icons now with the dakar leaf pack in the rear with plate bumpers and quarter inch skids plus a roof rack, bed cover, and RTT. My truck does great. Im adding a winch soon and will upgrade the 650 coils to 700 because I will have over 200 pounds of additional wieght on the front.

So many people buy 5100s cause they are cheap and affordable. Doesn't make them good.

In other words 5100s are what most people start with. Then upgrade to kings or icons. But you never hear people say I went with kings but now I want 5100s.

    Well, beside me:stirthepot:

If going with the OME, I would suggest the 887 coils instead of the 886. Will be a much better ride.

right on, i like the ome gear a lot too, primarily because thats what we built on my buddy's 100 series LC, and they take weight like a champ. we did the alpine loop w/ black bear and imogene weighing 8250 lbs, w/ no issues. listenin to the 3500 lbs jeeps on the cb radio talkin about airing down lol. I will prob just go that route and get the dakars, then if it breaks get the icons lol. I cant see myself droppin $1200 just on coilovers right now....wont have any money for the trips!
