What could cause this scratch/scuff on hood?(SOLVED)

Just washed my truck and noticed this scratch/scuff mark on the hood. Very strange spot and pattern. At first I thought it might be someone trying to pry off my hood light, but I dont see any pry marks near the light itself. Then I thought someone scratched it up, but dont see how it would turn out like this. Because someone drew on the door a couple times while it was still muddy(dried) at work and put scratches in it where he drew. Of course I was furious. But I let it go because he was a friend, albeit dumb, but he didnt think it would scratch like it did. Anyways some coworkers thought it was funny and I made an announcement saying that if someone gets caught doing it again as a joke, they'll be fired on the spot. There is at least one employee I could see doing it as he has a grudge towards me. But I cant be sure. ANYWAYS... Idk, It just doesnt look like someone did this. Only other thought would be that the car wash did it. The top spinner brush maybe that goes from the hood back over cab? Idk, but i'm seriously pissed off again. I'm not too worried about it because the previous paint job was a really basic shitty one. And I'll eventually be painting it over properly. But it's just the fact these scratches keep showing up and it pisses me off.
Any other ideas what couldve cause this?

 

Looks like the paint is dieing to me.

 

looks like something got on it and etched the clear coat.

some sort of chemical spray must have got onto your truck when driving by a plant or a chemical truck on the road. or you were spraying carb cleaner standing too close to the truck.

you might be able to buff it out with 600 or 800 grit wet sand paper then rubbing compound and hope it doesn't go all the way through the clear coat, if it does the clear coat will start to flake and peel there.

if it really matters to you, then spend the money and talk to a body shop and have it fixed the right way by professionals now before you let it get worse. if you try fixing this yourself and make it even worse then it is now and then you might need to get the whole hood repainted

 

Yeah it is. But odd it would show up on this specific spot. And you can actually see a few scratches in there too. There is nowhere else on the truck that looks like this. I would've noticed if this was starting to rub off. If it was just the paint 'dying' then it would've taken a while for it to rub/scuff off as bad as it has. So I am wanting to believe it was the last time I went through the car wash, which I try to avoid those spinner brush ones. But idk.

if the truck before you was fresh out of the mud pit then yours got sand blasted by the brushes still full of that sand

 

I did just use goo gone to dissolve the plasti dip off my fender flares, but it got all over the fenders and side of truck, with no affect like this. That's when I noticed it, after I washed it all down after I did that. And again I'm not too worried about fixing it or anything as I will be re-painting it in the future. And because I have a shit ton of rock chips all down the rocker panels and whatnot. Just looked like a really ODD scuff and its down to the primer, almost looks like speckles in there from pebbles/sand. Just wanted to know what the cause could be.

 

Hmm, maybe that's it! but again, there's no other area that looks like this. Maybe there's bondo there in that spot, and affected that one little spot more than the rest?? But the coat on the hood seemed like it was better than the rest of the truck.

 

i found that ceramic pro stopped any issue that may occur for that

 

well it is the highest point on the hood so it would get the most pressure from the brushes, have you gone up top and checked the roof?

 

Yep nothing. Idk, maybe its just the clear coat starting to come off in that one spot. Will it look like this when the clear coat starts to be rubbed off? Like its scuffed up with a frickin steel wool pad? I can't tell if its actually got into the paint. My bro just looked at it and says he thinks its just the clear coat too, but idk. He says it looks like it was a quick paint job before they sold it. Possibly just a scotch brite pad and spray over with a coat of each paint and clear coat, probably a bad/cheap clear coat itself as he says there's different brands I guess? He said he even saw some scratches from a pad in one spot when I first bought it. So I knew what I was getting into as far as what to expect. But didn't expect it to happen like this. I suppose time will tell. If it is the clear coat, then I'm sure the rest will follow soon enough and that'll give me my answer. I've had the truck for about 3 years now, maybe a little less. But who knows when the paint job was done. I guess it's time to start saving for the paint job already. Was gonna be last on my list...

 

I dunno, my clear coat is peeling and there are spots that look like someone hit it with a wire brush?

I think the clear coat hides a lot of scratches and when it peels we are just shocked at how rough it is under it.

maybe mine had a new clear coat sprayed over it too, I just got it so I don't know.

 

Ok so I just went and looked over the whole truck again just after the sun went down so I didnt have any glare, and I found two more similar but not as bad spots on the hood, and one more on the roof that look EXACTLY the same, again not as bad though. So it mustve been that shitty ass circle jerk car wash. Oh well. At least I know its not something some punk did. Was about ready to start breaking windows and slashing tires if I found out who it was. Ha

 

This is how mine is. Just the paint being old, its fading away.

 

Never had paint issues like that after a decade of coin cat washes. Your paint failing is much more probable.

Gotcha. Thanks for your input guys. I'm sure it is the paint. Just didnt think it would turn out looking like that when it did finally start to fade away. Ha. Cool well now I know. I'll just be careful when washing from now on until I can afford to re-spray her.

 

Definitely clear coat failure.

A proper washing, claying, and sealant should help to slow the progression.

 

I see you are outside of Phoenix... Have you been caught in any dust storms or some the crazy rain storms that were on the news? I lived on the other side of town in Surprise and was caught in a dust storm and the front of my truck was sand blasted. The sun down there is tough on the paint...

 

Ha. Yeah I sure do get caught in them. This is the road I live on. We get flooded in. In this photo it's settled down a bit, and is about 6inches deep. Other spots /washes that run into this main road are as deep as a foot or more and there's some further out that are multiple feet deep! It's nuts when it rains. Then the roads are shitty for about a week. Yeah we get it pretty bad with the haboobs too as we're nestled in between a few mountains so it's worse here than in town. I think last wind storm we had 60mph winds. My bro has a weather station on the roof is how I know. I'm gonna go tubing down this sum bitch one of these days! Lmao.
But yeah I saw that craziness in phx too!
