As was explained to me years ago, long runs of uninsulated pipe can lead to increased creosote buildup in the flue because the uninsulated pipe doesn't insulate very well. As the smoke cools creosote condenses in the pipe, and the more the smoke cools off by the time it exits the pipe the more creosote it deposits.

 

i don't think that length of run would be a problem especially as all the pipe in inside , but it's true creosote tends to build up when the smoke / gasses cool

 

Not sure if the pipe being inside negates the risk or not. I know that the installer I was talking to about it said that he wouldn't go more than 8-10 feet before switching over to insulated because it led to too much creosote buildup in the pipe. Might have just been one of his personal quirks.

 

I've found that straight lengths of single wall pipe have very minimal creostote build up , and the main concentrations come at the elbows , straight up should be fine

 

Bought a new stove a Jotul Green Wood should have done this years ago it is one of the modern ones that burns wood smoke. We got a chance to give it a try today made it to the mid 40's burned 5 logs all day one I put in 3 hours ago is still going. Bit of a learning curve for one that did not do smoky fires but once it's hot enough the smoke from the chimney just goes away when I was out side I thought the damn thing had gone out!

 

Do people actually think like this ?

 

Apparently. Us Pelletonians know we only get smoke on startup

 

To an extent. People can still smell the woodsmoke, and you still have the heat distortion from the chimney. Best bet would still be to burn at night and let it go out during the day if you want to hide the fact that you're heating your house.

You'd be amazed how many people do. And possibly alarmed and/or dismayed, depending on your viewpoint on society.

Properly seasoned wood in a modern woodstove only smokes at startup too.
Hell, properly seasoned wood in my antique cookstove only smokes on startup, too.
Speaking of which, had to light it two nights in a row. It's been rainy and in the 40's here for the last couple days, so the house has been damp. Nothing like a woodstove to take the chill off.

 

Burning off and on for the last 1.5 weeks started into my second bag on Mon. X2 on getting the chill out... by burning pellets!

 

Swapping the propane Jotul that's currently in our living room for a smaller pellet unit (we're thinking a Thelin Gnome right now) is definitely on my long-term 'to do' list for the house. However, it's definitely not a high priority since I've got the cook stove upstairs.
The pellet stove would be nice because I could wire it directly into the thermostat that the gas stove is currently on, so it'd be good for early fall/late spring where we could set it and forget it to hold the house at a steady temperature.
Shrug. Always more stuff that needs doing.

 

We've been having small lumber scrap fires for about a week now , still not that cold here just wet

 

Same problem we've got. It's been mid 40's, but everything's had that damp feeling the last two days when I've gotten home. We haven't gotten into the actual woodpile yet either; we've been burning sticks of roundwood from where the power company cut back the limbs and brush alongside our road after last year's ice storm. They appeared in the ditches this spring after the snow melted and we didn't want to let them go to waste.

Speaking of stovepipes, Oz, that photo you posted in the Home Improvement thread of your woodstove alcove didn't show what kind of chimney you used. Did you do a clay-lined masonry or metalbestos?

 

The thimble is mounted in the chimney



It's a 2 flue , concrete filled , seismically reinforced cinderblock outer construction with a clay flue liner
