Generator for to accessory mode?

Can you hook up a generator to the truck to run stereo, lights, and everything in accessory mode?

 

Sort of. You can run a generator and plug a battery charger into it then connect it to the battery to keep it charged while you use those things. You just need to add up the watts you are going to use and be sure the battery charger is large enough to keep up with the draw.

 

Seems like just another expense and another thing to have to tie down in the back of the truck. Maybe Ill just take and extra battery with me instead. Then again I allready have the generator, the charger would prob cost me just as much as an extra battery.

 

I would think a 12v charger should suffice run off a 1000w please correct me if I am wrong.

 

I'd just leave the truck running.
At idle, you should be able to run the engine for a couple hours per gallon of gas.
Much cheaper than any other setup (extra battery or generator) and also much more quiet than your average generator, unless you spring for a pricey Honda or Yamaha inverter generator.

 

Might be better off just using a generator for ac current and keep the truck out of the system altogether. For electronics you're better off with a PSW (pure sine wave) generator for cleaner power, like the 1000 watt Honda. For power tools, lights, electric grill a constructor type MSW (modified sine wave) will generally do.

 

You can get about 10 amps DC @15 volts out of a charger that is pulling 250 watts @ 120 volt or 2 amps. A 1000 watt Generator will put out about 8 amps at 120 volts so you should be able to get 30 to 40 amps DC if the charger is large enough. The problem is not to use more than the charger is able to put back into the battery.

 

This has been very helpful! Think I am just going to run the space heater and lighting directly off the generator and just run the engine for music etc...
