I don't know about the TRD unit but some of the cold air intakes are CARB legal. I had a Honda Civic with an AEM cold air intake that was wicked nice and it was legal. It even had CARB exemption number sticker right on the tube.

The TRD CAI is definitely not CARB exempt.

When it comes time to smog the truck in 4 years, just put the stock air cleaner back in (you did save the stock unit?)
I doubt you will get a ticket for having it, as I have never known an "officer of the law" to ask someone to open their hood to see if it was legal or not.

You won't get a ticket for it even here in CA unless you're caught racing and they want to look under the hood for racing mod parts. Happens to the ricers all the time. Just the look of racing is grounds for pulling someone over in many counties here.

As for the smog thing I've always wondered about that. Is the fact you won't pass smog simply because you have the CAI installed or does it really make that much difference in emmissions that the machines won't pass you? Never understood why more air would cause emissions problems.

Oh and it's four model years before the first smog is required on the truck then every other year after that smog is required. So basically if you purchase an 08 the first smog is required in 2012 but if you buy a used 05 the first smog would be due next year.

I was told it is not legal for street use because it gets rid of the carbon filter behind the regular Air filter. Dealers in my area say it voids the warranty also.

Maybe its because the K&N paid to get the CARB sticker and the TRD didnt? I'm also wondering why I was told it would void my warranty.

Don't know for sure but don't feel Toyota would even market it if not legal everywhere.

As for voiding warranty I don't think this would stand up if you did need warranty work by fed. law.

The TRD intake calls for removal of the secondary filter during the install doesn't it?

if something happens to ur truck, the stealer can try to say the intake did it, but they have to have undoubtable and supported proof that intake directly contributed to the problem

the trd intake system removes the entire stock intake setup thats after the throttle body, which includes the secondary filter. same way most intakes hook up, except for the airraid...its uses the stock setup up to the air box

OK guys...how could something ordered/purchased from Toyota (with a factory Toyota P/n ...SuperCharger, CAI, ect), that they would install, possibly void the warranty?

Maybe I'm missing info I'm not aware of :confused:

OK. Called Toyota corp. and the TRD intake DOES NOT void any warranties. I should have called them as soon as I heard this.:)

anything toyota sells for the vehicles will not void the warranty. the dealers will try to say other makers items will...eventhough its the exact same type of item that works the same way...just a way to bitch out of fixing natural issues w/ their products...all car makers will do it

Just out of curiosity, how much are you paying the stealership to install the exhaust and CAI? I installed both myself in my garage with simple hand tools in under an hour. Very, easy to do and Toyota/TRD has very well written instructions.

There any sound clips of the trd exhaust on a 4.0? Also was fuel efficiency effected?
