Not arguing that they are cheap , but you don't need to go back to the 70's , the 2014 F1 cars are an 800hp , 1.6L turbo V6 hybrid powerplant

^Those hybrid powertrains are abominations designed around artificial F1 rules with very limited utility outside F1.

How exactly are the rules artificial ?

And how is going faster , producing as much hp with 30% less fuel used than last season an abomination ?

Mercedes , Renault , McLaren , Ferrari , and next year Honda , all use or plan on using the knowledge gained in the fuel savings and hybrid technologies in their road cars

Wow OZ you sure trumped me. Sounds a lot better than the quaduple turbocharged 4 cylinder I was envisioning.

Getting back to the diesel discussion, I don't see if happening for the smaller trucks in North America for one simple reason: Emission requirements. I work with big FPT diesels for work, trying to design them into forestry equipment. The after-treatment system to meet the emissions of the US requriements makes a diesel engine rather inefficient (although the emissions are lower) and extremely complicated, and less reliable.

I wouldn't touch a new Cummins diesel even if they gave it to me. There is a reason Crysler moved away from the Cummins engine, and it isn't solely to do with the Fiat-Crysler deal. The Cummins tier 4 final engine is massively complex and far less reliable than Cummins engines of the past, the FPT is a little simpler, but anything to meet the emissions requirments of the states is going to be complex.

I'm not saying they won't come with a diesel option, I'm just saying that the diesel options to meet today's standards aren't worth the investment because complexity = unreliablility.

Aside from the safety equipment, everything about the F1 rules are artificial. The restrictions on engine displacement, number of cylinders, max rpm, boost pressue, allowable materials... are not the same type of constraints faced by automakers in roadgoing cars.

The cars are faster than last season due to rule changes. If all the powertrain rules are lifted, you can be sure none of the teams will bother with the current hybrid systems.

Of course the F1 teams have to say this to justify the $300+ million per year the F1 programs consume from the parent company...

I think you'll find pretty much every motorsport has a spec that the cars need to be designed to

The works teams don't need to justify anything , they don't even need to participate , and in the case of Honda they would only agree to returning if the cars did move from the naturally aspirated V8's to the hybrid V6's because it would provide an opportunity to use some of the tech in their road cars

Yes, for safety and commercial reasons (i.e. making the race a better spectator sport). Doesn't mean the technology the teams have chosen are optimal for transfer to road cars.

The works teams exist because some gearhead executive within the company was able to convince the board that the racing effort will be a positive investment, either in technology transfer or sheer advertising value. In case of Honda, going from V8 to V6 gives said gearhead executive more ammunition to make his case in front of the board.
