I have a 2005 Tacoma dbl cab 4x4, it did not come with cruise control

Is it easy to install cruise control?

How do we know if it is pre-wired for it?

Has any one installed cruise control?

    thanks in advance for advise

Search for the DIY thread on this, its a ten minute job in your '05 if automatic, 1/2 hour if manual as you need to add a clutch switch.

Cruise function is usualy built in, even if not sold originally. should be wiring in place, as Toyota makes is easy to convert their vehicles for hands/only control for folks who cannot use foot controls.

you can search Yaris forums for cruise control. a few people have made (me too) home made switches with a few resistors for Yaris CC. Yaris doesn't come with CC unless you fork over 500 bucks !!! for a 30 dollar switch....hence a lot of homemade ones

it will be the same for the Tacoma. Use the yaris info (if you cannot get an immediate answer about tacoma) and open up yer steering column and look for the connectors. I am gonna bet it is there...

It's prewired to the clockspring I believe

You would need the harness and cruise control knob (all plug and play)

I found on a 2015, if one removed the steering wheel shroud (split plastic) between wheel and dash, there is a twelve pin connector perpendicular to the steering column close to the wheel. Confirmation that the two lower left (closest to wheel) wires (brown and blue?) were present in the connector, confirmed prewire. If your vehicle is slightly older?, may be slightly different.

I found all the parts needed from Toyota Parts superstore in FL

all parts for $108 including switch, wiring harness, cover, screws

I just need to double check if it pre-wired, I did some research, need to check for brown/white & white / black stripe wires need to be present

If you are manual look way up above the clutch pedal and there should be a white plug that would plug onto the clutch switch. If auto and by switch you mean stalk then you'll just have to follow your research.......

my local toyota dealer said, that ECU will not read it

you can install all the parts but it may not read the cruise control speed set etc....

will I need to have ECU reset?

or is it simply plug and play?

I am getting a bit confused.....

Just plug in the switch stalk with the harness following the instructions, and you'll be good. No programming is required, its plug and play if pre-wired. And as far as I recall, all 6-lug trucks were prewired 2009 and previous. My '06 4X4 base was prewired. Whoever you spoke to at your dealer wasn't telling you the truth, either because they are ignorant of the facts, or purposely trying to mislead you.

They are pre-wired. And as mentioned above it plugs into the spiral cable.

No pre-wiring on my '09, I had to do everything from scratch.

OP, its the S8 connector you want to look at. On your '06 if spaces 1 (brown wire/white tracer) and 2 (white wire/black tracer) are populated you will probably have the rest.

what do I have to remove in order to check if it is pre-wired?
I took the side knock out piece out but could not see the brown/black wire...

Will I need to remove plastic cover under steering / ignition ?

No you need to remove the air bag...
The wire probably isnt in there. But it's prewired up to the clockspring
(That's how my girls Corolla was, and all I did was plug in the harness to the clockspring and cruise knob to the harness
