hi, i have a 1995 tacoma 4x4, 3.4 l engine, Automatic. I have owned it for 15 years now, but it seems like I really have to push quite"hard" to stop the truck. All the brakes are almost new, rotors and calipers good too. My mechanic has checked it and says everything looks fine. This is the issue:-
I canbe driving at 30-40 mph and hammer the brake pedal and the truck justs coasts to a stop in maybe 50 feet approx. I CANT lock up the brakes if i tried, so to me I think if a dog or small child ran out onto the road and I had to hammer the brakes hard I may run over them . NOT GOOD! Any suggestions from anyone out there as to what else to look for AND how to check it out?? One guy said to me that perhaps the power brake booster is leaking? jack Lang, port perry, Ont, canada

    Several things could cause this.

    • Bad brake booster
    • bad master cylinder
    • brake fluid quality
Is the pedal hard to push at all? Is it different with the engine running than when it is NOT running? (a bad brake booster will make the pedal feel exactly the same, engine running or not) Does the pedal go to floor and nothing happens? Does the pedal fade as you hold your foot on it?

yes the pedal is fairly hard to push. Compared to my wifes 2008 suzuki 4x4 on mine you have to push the brake pedal twice as hard! Pedal does not go down to the floor and doesnt fade. Is there a way to test the brake booster to see if that is the problem for sure/
