I need to print this out and go to my dealer. Last time I was there they had no clue what I was talking about in regards to the TSB.

I put a tank of 87 in mine and low RPM in 5th gear and I can hear it. 89 mellows it a bit and 93 almost completely gets rid of it. That being said, if the manual says it can run on 87, it should be able to run on 87. I didn't think I'd need to put premium in it when I purchased it. It would be one thing if I had a supercharger or other type of forced induct, but sub-240 hp and pinging...not so much.

I was told my ecu is locked, the guy also told me because of that don't even think about trying to put a supercharger in. Maybe its been answered already but is this possible or poor dealership service? It would be relieving to know in this case that it is just poor service and i should take it to a different dealership.

what does ECU locked mean ?

A fully licensed TechStream, with the latest software, can access every programmable component on the vehicle.

only if you are over 3/36000 should they give any guff about a TSB that involves loading new code into the ECU

after 3/36000 they need to write up a detailed explanation for corporate as to why they performed the TSB, and that requires a tech to drive and confirm the symptoms and problems, and also a test drive confirming it worked. otherwise they don't get paid. or they charge you for the programming time which is .4 hours but a dealer can easily make it a 2 hour job

Just to clarify, the pinging described is similar to a "rattling" sound of sorts, correct? If so, my truck definitely pings under load. It really doesn't matter what gear I'm in.

Sounds like you're a candidate for the TSB - so far so good for me at ~3,000 miles since TSB performed.

Did you print out a copy of the TSB to show them? It sounds like your service department thinks you want to alter the ECU with your own settings? Maybe a printed copy will help show them this is a toyota factory TSB.

From what I remember, this TSB falls under the 80,xxx mile emissions warranty actually, not the 3/36000.

Yes. Myself and other forum members have noticed that the pinging noise is exaggerated at 80 F+ outdoor temps & ~ 1500 RPM under throttle load. Gear choice is not as likely related as throttle input. Bring it in to your service department with TSB printed out :).

In your opinion, is it worth it? Also, how long did they keep your truck? Shouldn't be a very long process...

It was worth it for me. I was paying for premium 93 fuel just so it would run smooth and not sound like a circus under the hood. Post-tsb I'm back to running unleaded 87, and it runs great. If you have the same symptoms as myself and others are describing, bring it in. If you don't have the symptoms yet, you could bring it in anyway.

My dealership asks for the truck for at least 1/2 day to be safe. In reality, I had my truck back in 3 hours...close to 1/2 day. Some people have had it completed while they waited in 1 hr. or less.

I printed out a couple tsb's as it was right after i bought it used and it had right around 65k. When i showed the desk guy the tsb's he gave me this foff look and asked me when i could come back for it, i asked them to just call but i needed the truck back by 5. I got a call less than an hour later saying that my truck was ready, when i asked what they found/did he said "we'll talk about it when you get here". I got there and he flat out said they did nothing as my ecu was locked, that they couldn't make any changes to it and they drove it and its normal. I now have 90k so i am SOL.

Nice, I think I'm going to have to get this done. Even with it being in the 50s here at the moment, it's still pinging, so I can't imagine what it would be like when it gets hot again...

expert Toyota shop foremen have a name for it...a 'chuggle'

if you know what a ping/knock is, it is pinging. a mild sound like a bag of marbles. it can happen to
any engine but it happens more often than toyota intended or they got too many complaints.

    yes 80,000 miles emissions warranty

    12's and up only

Same thing for me, they had no clue the first time I took it in. They tested a ton of things and gave it back to me and said it was good to go. Needless to say it still made that noise. Then after 3 more weeks of hearing it I knew I needed to find out what it was. Came here, saw these forums and a few awesome members suggest it could be this pinging thing. Printed out the PDF file, took it to the dealer and said this is all you need to know. They made the fix in under 2 hours, I've been driving it for 4 days now and no problems at all.

Print out the PDF and take that in with you.

While everyone on this thread is stating that they are having ping while driving, has anyone had ping at idle, while parked?
I purchased my '13 DCSB O/R new, February of 2013. That summer, we went on a 3400 mile trip out to Colorado/Yellowstone/Black Hills. Once we got home, I started to notice what I thought sounded like an exhaust manifold leak once the engine was at operating temp. while parked and at idle. I asked the dealer to look into it, and they said they couldn't duplicate the noise. I wasn't too worried about it at the time so I put it out of my mind.
Now, a little over a year later, with around 32k on the clock, I still notice the noise. Park, idle, sitting in line at the drive thru, etc. Now I have started seeing talk of the fuel ping TSB, and I'm wondering if this is my issue...
    Thoughts?

I'd take that print out with you and tell them it's still making the noise even during idle. Maybe it's pinging, maybe not, but make sure they notate your complaint on your service order. That's a new truck and that needs to be documented. Once your warranty is over, it's on you. If it's at least documented, you might have more of a chance of getting some assistance after your warranty expires. Maybe it's just me, but if there is something weird going on with my truck and it's still under warranty, hell yea its going into the shop.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
Tacoma tick, maybe? Search for it on TW. If you have eliminated that then I'm not sure. Never had mine ping at idle, though earlier in this thread one user posted a video of his truck doing just that.

Either way, this TSB isn't a 3/36k warranty issue. It falls under the Federal emissions warranty, which goes either to 80k miles. Time-wise I forget offhand. It will be listed in your warranty booklet though.

Had this done on my '14 last Friday. 300 miles in (85% highway) and no issues.

Mine was noisy at idle. The noises intensified while driving. I'd bring it in if I were you - print the TSB and take it along.

    TRD Exhaust,
I had a ticking under load on my '13 4.0, put it on a lift at my shop to check for an exhaust leak. No leaks so I started searching about spark knock and found this TSB here, I brought my truck to Toyota to check why there is an oily residue between the block and bell housing. Also told them to check for a spark knock under load and mentioned a reflash TSB. Of course they could not find the TSB so (thank you TW) I printed and faxed it to them. I am happy to say not only has the noise stopped but at the same time the slush box feel of the 5spd auto is MUCH better, I again looked on here and found the TSB addresses the transmission shifting too. I was truly disappointed with the way the truck shifted before this and now I will say it's bearable. As for the oily sheen on the inspection cover they said it was residual from assembly, they confirmed there WAS oil there of "some kind" but could not identify. Maybe I'll just have to keep an eye on it since they cleaned it, as long as I have the documentation that I brought it in for that I feel better.
