And like a Taco, that can be yet another slippery slope for the wallet. Easy enough to spend anything from $150-650+ depending on what you want (+ antenna).

Yeah, it's a slope I'm not really interested in venturing too far down right now.
    Thanks! More permanent antenna options?

Also, how easy is it to move these units between the truck and my shop?

If that is what you have in mind why not just use a speaker mike? Most repeaters are fairly local so with 5 watts and a decent antenna you should have no problems. Mt. Washington is about 30 air miles away I have no problem talking to hikers on the Mt. with a 1/2 watt HT yes it's 6000' but most repeater sites are fairly high also.

    Hi all,

I would like to install an HF radio in my 2013 DCSB and I am looking for suggestions on installing a Lil Tarheel II. Has anyone installed one of these antennas on their truck? If so where and how did you mount the antenna and what other steps did you take for the installation. Pictures would be great!

    Thanks

I've thought of that but would like more than 5watts of power. Fairly high is pretty relative here in the flat lands of VA.

    Hmm..

Picked up a Newmar Maine 12V power supply from the local marine consignment shop.

Measures 13.5V DC output voltage with no load - checked via my DMM.

However, when I connect my Yaesu 897 to it, the internal voltmeter on the radio registers 17.0/16.5V, no load/TX. I'm perplexed.

I know the voltmeter is correct in the Yasesu, checked it against one of my other known 12V power supplies..

    Suggestions?

My Yaesu does the same thing. My scangauge will show 14.1 and the vlt reading on the radio with be 15.7/15.8. According to my Fluke MM the ScanGuage is correct.

I figured that it may just be a discrepancy in the Yaesu's volt measuring circuit..

Either way, it had a lot of noise and fluctuation - returned it today and got a refund.

No sense in trashing a $1,000 radio with a bargain power supply.

That's a great antenna does amazingly well replace the whip with some thing around 56" It may screw up you 6 meter band but the HF side will shine you can all ways put the shorter whip back on for 6 meters. The mount on the body is a standard ball mount the black mount at the top is home made the black part is lexan the entire antenna is RF hot so it can not be grounded. Yes you need a ground but the ball mount provides all the ground that is needed the coax brad is landed under the mounting screw for the mount. Do not buy into the ground plane myth. P.S. remove the tail light assembly for your wiring install.

    Crom,

Need your help. I have a SnugTop with a Yakima rack. I carry bikes, skis, kayaks and so on...I want to install an antenna just like you have yours. On the 4th pic on your post above, can you share how you installed the antenna? Will be installing a FT 857D on the trk.

If you could share some pics on how you have that antenna, I will in your debt.

    Thanks!
