I drove my 03 preerunner with a v6 over 65 miles with the gas light on. Usually gas lights come on pretty early from what ive seen.

Your tanks must be bigger than mine, the only way I'm hitting 300+ miles is if I drag it behind my other truck. I fill up around 240 miles, 18-20mpg.

    This is what I'm thinking. I get 220-230 max. 07 TRD 4x4

I have a receipt laying around from a couple of fill ups ago. I wrote the mileage on it. I went 385.5 miles and it took 19.053 gal, which is a hair worse than I usually get. The last time I filled up, though, I went a little over 403 miles and it took about 18 and a half gal which is just a hair better than I usually get. Typically it's between 20.5 to 21.5 mpg. It varies depending on the situation. I don't believe I get the best mpg on the freeway where the speed limit is 65 to 75 mph, though. I seem to get the best mileage on secondary roads with few to no stoplights and speeds around 45 to 55 mph.

I don't think "miles per tank" is a good frame of reference considering that everyone's gas light and gas gauge will be slightly different; and some people fill up at different gauge notations.

How many miles per tank is going to vary from vehicle to vehicle, and driver to driver. Just like mpg. A different driver in my truck could get 24mpg, or maybe 18mpg. And a different driver could go further or shorter distance before needing to fill up.

On the other hand the sensors for the low gas light and the gas gauge itself shouldn't vary that much to make a difference. Just like the gas tanks should hold the same amount of gas from one truck to the next. We are talking about a mass produced vehicle; everything has to be within a range of tolerances to be acceptable.

Knowing your vehicle's range can be important. It can make more practical difference than knowing your mpg. Such as on a long trip cross country and you need to know if you can make it from this gas station that's sold out of gas to the next one.

18.5g at 21mpg only gets you to 388 miles. Somethings wonky, but just a tad.

Still, my range apparently sucks or my gauge is close to empty a long time sooner than it should. Im going to have to make a note at my next fill up.

Car range is pretty minor. Back when i was flying it was more important. People would ask how far you could get on a tank, answer is, it depends. Maybe a thousand miles, maybe -500. The only important thing was how long you can run, not how far.

I typically get 400 miles/tank on my stock 2.7, regular cab, automatic with mixed driving. On a pure highway trip I can easily get more than 400 miles.

I found 2 tanks were available, 15 and 18 gallons, explains a lot. My math plays out, I've got a 15.

Why are you guys saying "TANK"... Are you actually running out of gas... pushing your truck to the station and then topping it off... That's a "TANK".

The truck has a 21 gallon tank. Unless you ran out, you won't be adding 21 gallons back in.

The light comes on with 4 gallons still in the tank and the gauge is on the E LINE with 3 gallons still in the tank.

What is a tank to you? How many gallons?

BETTER: Give miles per gallon, not miles per "tank".
    1) Top tank and zero-out your trip odometer.
    2) Drive until you need to add gas (below 1/4 tank line or to light-on would be good)
    3) Top tank, record gallons going in.
    4) Divide miles on the trip odometer by those gallons = MPG.
Correct for tire size if different than stock if you want accuracy.

Ultragauge is not on the Tacoma, but the trip odometer is. I don't assume everyone has one of those... and I frankly don't trust them as much as I trust my odometer and the gas pump.

Yes mine is only 2wd and my fuelly thing is wrong I can not figure out why it is saying 17.7, I did the math and I am getting more like 16.3 mpg. I drive like 5 miles to school, and 5 miles home. So I drive a lot of stop and go.

I hope this doesn't come across as a flippant answer, because I don't mean it to be. But three reasons off the top of my head are because it's how the OP asked the question. Also because it's fewer keystrokes than typing "miles between fill ups," which in my experience is what people who ask how far you can go on a tank of gas really want to know. Which segues into the third reason. It's a common question. Maybe not on internet forums, though.

I am usually right at 300 when the gas light comes on (normal variation might be 20 miles +/-). I generally drive like a granny. My auto will shift around 2000 75% of the time, 2500 20% of the time, and 5% of the time may be higher like when I really need to get out into traffic.
