I really like your truck man. I completely agree with you, the new ones have too many critical wires in the loom to be reliable.

Front long travel custom: king 10" CO, solid lowers, fabbed spindle, heimed everything ect. Rear still in progress, waiting to be put on: bilstein 9100s, T100 axle. Stock 3.4 engine, 4.30 gears.
Do you have standard 15/12 valving in your coilovers as well as valving in your bypass?

Maybe you weren't up to speed, or have too much dampening Up front

Oh believe me I am really jealous of the power of the newer trucks and hopefully doing a lil something to keep up on runs better but knock on wood she has never been trailered home in 4 years of abuse

Ya...the power is nice, but driving a 22RE full tilt is a lot more fun than a 4.0 at half throttle. Unless you're in the dunes a lot, power doesn't mean much in the desert. I had the most fun in my 1980 Hilux with a 20R, and still wish I never sold it.

In that case I highly advise a 3.4L swap...or a 5.0 ford swap. My buddy has a built 302 ford in his 85, and it's ridiculous. It's like a little monster truck. If you stand on it doing 55mph on dry pavement it's just blue tire smoke in the rearview. He had to do a body lift to make it fit though...

Sounds like a lot of dampening for I light truck, I would use the coilovers almost as a coil carrier and run most of the valving in the bypasses

I have a 3.4 sitting on my side yard but I'm reconsidering and will probably just end up putting a turbo on the 22re

Yeah, the one has ~18'' of travel up front, and the owner loves running on the sides of dunes, and driving down razorbacks.

What id do with a truck like yours. I love how it looks man. My first truck ever was an 86 "extended cab". was an auto though..you wanna talk about no power..HA. That thing..couldn't even go up hills on asphalt. haha was a fun truck though.

Got broke into and lit on fire though. Burned the whole garage down.

    Then i got the taco.

Thats an excellent point that they dont really even flex out much other than occasional water crossing or small crevice they go over, and with stock suspension they probably dont have much up travel to begin with, or set them to be basically a droop setup with bump stops adjusted. I'm not looking for a rock crawler either I just hit light trails on way to camping and little mud here and there thats why I'm thinking the 63" spring swap might give me all the flex I need but I still want to be able to run the large tires and the glass for the look I got in my head. I'm still open to going to 4.5 glass if it will cover the tires so I'll do bit more figuring and shopping.

not to help spend your money but I have had a ton of the 22r and 22re trucks along with 3 tacomas with the 2.7 and 2 with the 3.4 (including the semi rare reg cab 3.4) I would maybe think about a 3rz swap, you can probably sell the 3.4 and 22re and cover most of the cost to do a mild 3rz turbo. I've been looking into it and the 3rz is a great turbo motor (or even the 2.4L 2rz from a 5 lug taco)

i have a friend who had a custom real built. It has a little over 1k hp to the wheels, guessing easily over 20in of travel up front and more in the rear. On ~37" sand tires (paddles in the back and whatever those skinny front sand tires are called) w/ true bead locks

the 2rz in my 5 lug with the manual tranny was a torquey sob in the higher (over 2k) rpm's even with 31's on the stock gearing

Get a video of you running the section from the outside of the truck, it's impossible tell from a video of the inside. Are you going out this weekend? You don't know what Valving you having in it currently?

Ya that's the reason I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet. All three options are really good. Just can't figure out which will be the most reliable and easiest to work on at the end of the day
