Those are pretty aggressive looking winter tires, what are they? My Hankooks look like basic passenger car tires...they look so wimpy in the winter!

Do you have dedicated wheels for the winter tires, or do you swap them on and off?

I miss my duratracs. Wish I had an aggressive winter tire that's bigger than 265/65/17....

They are Duratracs. I actually ran my gimpy little Grandtrek's this summer for the MPG's, and it's nice to have the truck looking like a truck again. I don't have a dedicated set of summer/winter rims yet. They're on my radar but aren't top priority. I've still got friends working at local tire shops, so I can get my summer/winter changeover done for $20. At that rate I could swap them over a LOT before I'd cover the price of a set of wheels, sensors, and a scan tool to relearn the sensors in each set of wheels. Plus while the shop changes my tires over I take my TPMS sensors apart and hit the threads with fresh Never Seize.

They really are. Between the Tacoma 4x4 capability and the Duratracs I don't worry about the GF when she takes my truck in during storms. And I drove us back through a blizzard from my parent's house on hilly back roads with 4-8 inches of standing snow on them last winter, and only needed to switch to 4x4 once (to pull a Corolla out of a ditch). That's what really sold me on them. Prior to that I was thinking of them as just an aggressive A/T like what I'd had in the past.
When this set gets threadbare I'm definitely getting another one.

    Edit: Happy 2nd Monday!

Why would you get another set of sensors and a scan tool? Just keep the sensors in your summer wheels and store them nearby where you park the truck in the winter and the light will stay off.

I have the bad luck of a combination of a state inspection that comes due in May (after I've switched to summers) and a girlfriend who panics whenever a warning light comes on in the dash. Plus she has the memory span of a goldfish when it comes to warning lights; she calls me every 5000 miles when the 'MAINT REQ" light comes on asking me what it means (it's time to change your oil, dear).
As soon as she got out of range of the sensors in the summer wheels she'd call me because the TPMS light was blinking (I know this for a fact, because every time a light comes on in the dash in her car she calls me). And if I kept the sensors in the winter wheels I'd have to bolt them on when I took it in for a sticker or else it'd fail because the light was on.

    Thanks Ford/Firestone!!

Pretty pumped, scored a brand new bouncer thing for the baby off craigslist last night for $40. Brats the hell out of the $120 retail price.

    Oldish person excitement...

As long as you never need to go more than a few miles away from them, you're good. I still need to build the pipe bomb for mine.

The Toyota ECU checks for the sensor every 25 miles or so, so you can get to the inspection station, pass and get back before the light comes on. I did that for a couple years with that Tacoma. Or, have Alex remove the LED altogether, no more dummy light and I'm pretty certain it doesn't show up in an OBD II scan :D

I heard for the Ford, I can't even get away with the pipe bomb thing, the sensors actually know that they're spinning. If they're just sitting still and pressurized, they'll still throw a warning light!

    FYI-
Amazon's running a promotion right now for 20% off of boots. Just enter the promo code "BOOTUP14" when you're checking out. Just tried it on a set of Chippewa's and saved a sweet $30.

Pretty sure the computer checks pressures at startup, too. We used to have somebody come in with a light on when I worked at a retail shop, we'd air them up and have them start their car. 95% of the time (Mostly Chrysler products were the exception) the light would kick off immediately on startup.

Right now I have a truck with a dash that doesn't squeak, rattle, or chatter. I want to keep it that way, so I'm not tearing that sucker apart unless I have to.

Right now the whole sensor thing is a non-issue anyway, since I've just got the one set of wheels. I'll worry about them when/if I pick up another set.

Not spam; true story. Just trying to save y'all some money if you needed a new pair of boots anyway.
