Super quiet seems as if ive gained acceleration since my 285's. I havent had a chance to test them off road yet :( I bought the 255/80/17 and i have no rub issues. I love the look of the 255 over 285. I'm running them at 40PSI Front and 38PSI Rear < Chalk Tested ;)

^^ The puncture test is cool, def some good info.

    255 > 285 IMO
I love the look of mine also. They fit the wheel well perfectly, and I run all 4 at 40psi. Great feedback, looking fwd to hearing about you getting off road with them. I've had great success.

OP, were you running LT or P rated 285s before you went to the ST Maxx? You said you've gained acceleration since the change in size, have you gained or lost any MPG or power?

I'm on the fence between the 285 or the 255/80 for my next tire, but the weight of the 255/80 is somewhat concerning compared to some P metric 285s.
Most P285/70/17 are ~48lbs vs ~58lbs for the 255/80 ST Maxx.

    Chux,
Do you have any experience to compare fuel economy or power performance between your 255/80 vs. 285s?
I too run Stealth 6s and would rather not have to do the CMC just to run 285s, but the P rated model 285s I'm looking at are significantly lighter weight than the ST Maxx.

For anyone with the 255/80/17 Cooper st Maxx: If your wheel is turned so that the edge of your tire is close to the bottom edge at the back of the fender, how close is the tire to rubbing?

Here is a picture od my stock 265/65/17. I have Icons that lift the front almost 2 inches.

What you are seeing is three pieces of quarter/inch strips of wood wedged between the left tire and the Bush Wacker Finder flairs. The wheel is turned to the left. I am thinking I might have to trim the Bush Whackers if I go with the 255/80/17 Cooper ST Maxx. How close is the tire to the fender when the wheel is turned? Also, how is the ride with the load range E tires?

    Looks great!
285s? Do you have much rubbing to be rectified? Did you ever weigh them before mounting?

I have the E range coopers, they are definitely stiff. If i did it over again, id do C range, and save some weight too. i feel every bump

I think my next set will be the 255/80/17 like how much taller they are compared to my 265/65/17...

Well, I bought and mounted the 255/80r17. They look awesome, great traction, quiet for an aggressive tire.

I took them off after 9 days and put on AT3s.

Going from a 38 pound Goodyear to a 57 pound ST Maxx wasn't for me. Longer stopping distance and delayed acceleration pulling out onto a busy 4 lane, I didn't like it.

Pleased with the AT3s thus far but no rain or mud yet. Sold the S/T Maxx to my dealer service advisor who is lifting his FJ with an Ikon lift next week.

Me too, I'd be all over that. I love my 265 AT3, just feel they don't fill the wheelwell. The weight of the ST Maxx is its biggest drawback IMHO, ~10lbs heavier than the AT3 in 285

I went from stock 265 rugged fails to the 255 Cooper Maxx

I don't follow my MPGs, and performance experience consist of doing 80mph down the highway everyday, driving threw soft sand with no probs, and going off road and threw mud holes with ease.. unless the mud hole is up to the door sills :anonymous:

Looking good! I like the black and white contrast too.
