Interesting didn't realize more people had this issue. I'm chalking mine up to the dent. Do you know if the sending unit is replaceable or not. I just hate not knowing where my guage is at since it is always on e

    Replaceable, yes. Cheap, no....

    http://parts.camelbacktoyota.com/pa...FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS&component=Sending unit

Even then, not 100% sure if that is what's messed up. But if you do replace it and it works let me know please! Haha

You might try a junk yard or Ebay.... Found the whole assembly on Ebay.

Well maybe when I pull the bed I'll consider replacing the fuel pump and maybe replace the sender unit while I'm there. I'll pull it and look at it maybe something just bent and I can bend it back.

Thanks for the info Brent. It won't be for a while but I'll post up what becomes of it.

No problem. I've learned to live with it now, but wouldn't mind if I knew how to fix it haha

I'm sick of looking at the fsm manual... :frusty: I'm just gonna strip my entire interior and trace out the easiest way to pick up the dimmer circuit.

Awesome! Thanks Ant! I think I'm gonna just pull the dash piece under the steering wheel. That should get me close enough to see the rheostat and then spread out from there since I have to go up the a-pillar with it and go down to the shifter.

Didn't read enough to see if you did anything to your tank, but figured I'd explain the little I know. I guess it could be some sort of electrical problem with the sender, in which case this isn't really applicable.

I had all sorts of issues with my gas gauge after denting the tank pretty bad. First off, the low fuel light sensor is a completely separate device from the gas gauge float.

Here's some pictures of my (very bent) sending unit.

    IMAG0615_zpspqzydroa_a3b9a82941e066d7a45bd155f266a5d521d38bd3.jpg

    IMAG0616_zps0iamn4sr_23d061da27dbcc6a6803bb6ef7b95eeb28bdc0a3.jpg

In the first picture, the little silver round thing is the low fuel sensor, and the float is pretty obvious. My original problem with the gas gauge was that it worked from full to about 5/8 of a tank and stopped. What I ended up doing was dropping my tank, which is actually pretty easy.

With the tank out and the sending unit out, you should be able to see what it's getting stuck on. There is a square plastic baffle in the tank that the sending unit sits it, and the float is very tight against this baffle. With my bent sending unit, the float would get stuck. I bent it a little the first time, mainly in an attempt to get the fuel pump back to the bottom of the tank, and after that, my gas gauge only worked from like 1/8 tank down. Dropped it again and really studied it, this time, looked at the sending unit through the other hole in the top of the tank (vent?) and was able to bend everything back so that it works.

Sorry if this isn't pertinent to your issue, but though it might be helpful.

Also while I'm here, I've got the lower lights on my OTRATTW switch to turn on and dim with the dash lights by pulling both power and ground straight from the dimmer. You can not jump the ground from the other side of the switch. There's 3 wires coming out of the back of the dimmer, some combination of two of them worked for me, I do guess and check wiring. But I can look and see what I did if that would help.

    Very helpful! thank you!!!
I dented my tank so I probably have that same issue you had, only difference maybe be how I dented mine versus how you dented yours.

Those pictures should help out a lot when the time comes to fix it. Was your sending unit hard to bend back or easy fairly easy

Yep the ground is variable apparently so you have to take the ground from the switched side of the dimmer. Don't worry about checking the wiring diagram ant posted should set me straight. Thank you though

Always have my dimmer on high, so I just used the wire to the bulb that used to be in the ash tray. Perfect spot.

I didnt think of that one. I might use that one for the winch controls I have at the shifter.

Here's what my tank looked like after I smashed it (and the carrier bearing).

    IMAG0584_zpsdq4wnwf4_883438ea0c546212cfed1ef8709c11ee033a7d1e.jpg

Sending unit was very easy to bend back. Also manged to pop quite a bit of the dent out of the tank though the sending unit opening. Just take your time, look the through the other hole in the tank, and get everything lined up so the pump is at the bottom, and the float has full range of motion. I tied a string to my float, set the sending unit in place, and pulled while watching through the other hole.

Also, don't think a new sending unit would help as it won't match your dented tank. Could always go with a junkyard tank too. If you charcoal canister is on top of your tank, you're going to have a harder time finding one though. IIRC, the charcoal canister is only on the top of the tank in late 02-04, all the rest had them under the hood.

Also, I heard some mention of pulling the bed. You'll get arguments about this, but I dropped my tank a few times, and could probably do it in less than 30 minutes. With it dropped, you'll also has better access to fix your issues.

    Good luck!

Guess and check wiring is more exciting!
