Hello everyone. First post in your forums.

I bought a 2004 two wheel drive Tacoma this last weekend and had the windshield replaced today. Tonight, I noticed a bright blue light on the dash that burns all the time. It is located right next to the dimmer control for the dash lights.

Anyone know what this is and how to turn it off? Doesn't seem to be related to anything I've tried so far...parking brake, doors securely shut, lights turned off correctly, etc. I don't have a repair manual for the truck yet, or the original owner's manual.

I have a manual transmission if that matters, and fluid levels seem to be good, though I have only glanced at the brake fluid and didn't take the top off.

That should be the indicator light for when the high beams are on.

Perhaps the headlights are out of adjustment and for the lights to project down the road the high beams have to be on. Cycle the headlight switch to low and see if the blue light goes out and if the headlights switch to low beam.

isn't the red one at the bottom the alarm? I think the blue one is something else, alarms are almost always red.

I would bet its for some accessary light driving lights or fog lights

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

Here is a photo of the light. This is a flash photo, so the blue is wiped out.

    Tacoma blue light.jpg

And when I say its on all the time, I mean its on all the time. The truck is sitting in the driveway, not running and this blue light is on.

Looks like an alarm indicator. Disconnect and reconnect the battery but have the remote handy to disarm it. If you don't have a remote then don't disconnect the battery.

don't disconnect the battery, it loses all your radio stations and the engine ECM has to reprogram itself so the truck will run bad for a while until it readjusts itself to be tuned correctly.

the simple thing is call the guy you bought it from and ask him, hopefully you still have his number.

does your truck have an alarm? if so pull the fuse out and see if that light goes out.

the only thing that should "always" be on would be the alarm but its very odd for it not to be a red light but maybe its just that brand alarm system wants to be different

I could be mistaken but I think if its the alarm it should go out when the truck is running but I don't have an alarm so im not sure about that.

I don't have a remote, and I'd be very surprised if this truck has an alarm. Its a very basic model...no power windows, no cruise, no power locks.

Follow the wire from the light and see what it goes to. That should tell you what it's for.

Undoubtedly true, but hardly practical. I'd rather not go digging around in the guts of the dashboard.

Well, I'll check back in later and see if anyone has seen this exact situation before.

Not that hard to do. Just look underneath where the pedals are, go up behind where the light is and follow the wire

You can pull that whole panel down and off with what 2 10mm bolts maybe a couple screws? The thing comes off so easy there isn't a reason not to take it off and see. On those trucks most of the room is at the bottom of the dash to hold something it could be connected to anyway.

If you had a 10mm and a 12mm socket you could practically take the entire truck apart.

well no one is suggesting you go into your wiring harness or pulling wires from under your dash, we just say there will be a wire that is loose and not part of your wiring harness that doesn't belong under there so it will be easy to find and see where it runs to. if its not that important to you to spend a little time finding out what its for then just put tape over the light and call it a day.

that light is on for a reason and whatever it is has to be a drain on your battery but as said, if you don't feel like putting a "little" effort into it there really isn't anything we can do to help you other then suggest you pull out one fuse at a time from the fuse panel until it goes off, then see what doesn't work.

I didn't really mean to ruffle feathers in here. It was pitch black outside, and I've been busier than a one legged man stomping out brush fires this week. In fact, my butt may be on fire as we speak.

Usually its better to ask people with experience, rather than try to re-invent the wheel by yourself, but I gather from your replies that this is something outside the regular lights/warnings that come standard with the truck.

I'll figure it out, probably this weekend. Appreciate the answers. At least I know its not the self destruct timer.

A factory alarm would have/should have words around the indicator, as opposed to just being a light. You say it always is on, correct? That would not seem to indicate an alarm indicator as well. DO you have any additional wires running to the positive battery terminal?

Eh, see my Build Thread sig link. Too many mods to list.
FYI- my 2 year old Viper alarm has a blue LED when armed...so no, they aren't always red.

I am curious about this as well though, so please post your findings!

more than likely it is a led for an aftermarket viper alarm. When the alarm is in Valet mode, (security disabled) this light illuminates continuously. What do you have for a remote for the truck?
