Old Man Emu setups on 1st gens

I think Ben (m3bassman) is running 883s on his Xtra cab.

 

Check it out yo. I'm running this setup 883's no 10mm whatever kit. Just a top plate spacer on the driver side coilover for lean. At first the ride is quite stiff on bumps but it'll buff out.

 

this is what i was originally thinking until talking to wheelers. i wont be doing any wheeling, truck is my daily driver so i am concerned with the stiffness. they mentioned a better ride due to the length of the 882 and how the 882's are under much more compression when mounted up. i assume wheelers knows their stuff

 

Did you mean 883's in your above quote? (you mentioned you where thinking of going that way earlier) 881's and 883's are the same height (375mm) but different spring rates (87 N/mm vs 103 N/mm respectively), the stiffer ride/less compression would go to the 883's if that is what you are looking for. Either way I would not add the spacer to the 883's as I think it would put you nose heigh without extra weight up there. I've used both the 881's and the 882's, both feel great on the road but the 882's handled the load much better off road.

OME greasable Shackle kit

Diff Drop kit

BAMF BPV




Sound like im missing anything or is there something i should change?

Sounds like you've got it figured out. Looking forward to seeing pics once you pull the trigger! Which bumpers are you looking at?

 

Got the Relentless fab wrap around DIY kit being welded the 7th.. Also relentless front finishing around the 10th.. Can't wait.. Still going back and forth between the 882 and 883 coils..

 

I like my 882 coils. Give a nice ride now that they are broken in and support the weight up front just fine. The 883 are gonna be stiffer for sure. You def won't need the top spacers in front either way. And if you do it's easy to add on later. Just get the longer studs for coil assembly.

 

I'm thinking the Jeep JK 10mm spacer the BoxRocket has. Because i'm going to be adding the dakar AAL i wanted it to sit more level.

 

yes i was referring to the 883's. i was considering the 882's due to the fact that they were recommended for the double cabs and V6 but after talking to wheelers, they have me considering the 883's. i expect the dakars to put me approx 2.25" higher in rear, the 10mm spacer was recommended by wheelers along with the 883's to get me close to level (with the rough measurements i took from middle of wheel to bottom of fender, wheelers seems exact in their opinion)

 

Has anyone with a 95-97 installed OME pickup leaves from 89-95?

They are the same dimensions length wise and have slightly more arc.

I will probably go this route, just curious.

get an extended rear brake line also.

Aaand you might want to get new Main eye bolts for the leafs, they are very commonly rusted/seized and might need to be cut out. Get greaseable ones.. (Daystar)

 

Dont those come with the greseable shackle kit?

Anyways, I like to change out high torque bolts like that anyways. I believe my kit from wheelers had a replacement bolt. Might want to double check that.

 

Yeah, i want to use new bolts washers and nuts as much as possible.

 

I don't have the Dakars so I'm not sure what's included in your kit, ask the vendor I guess..

The Daystar bolts are not grade 8, and have lots of holes in them. Don't like that.

The original main eyes bolts may seize, but they are not really designed to articulate much. Most of the articulation comes at the rear shackles (which work hard and do need grease) and leaf itself. Look at the stock leaf front bushing design, and the Dakar, and notice the knurled edges on either end of the metal bushing, which is meant to contact and grip the main eye mounting flanges on the frame.

When you install these and torque this bolt, the truck should be resting in neutral stance (not hanging in full droop or anywhere between). This procedure traps the metal bushing against the flanges. If you load up a stock main eye bolt with a healthy dose of antiseize, it should be fine for a long time. I just pulled mine after 5 years for my Dakar swap, and the antiseize coating looked (and felt) like the day I put it in.

The Wheeler replacement pack I pulled off, on the other hand, had a fully rotating bushing, no knurling on the metal sleeve ends, and the rubber portion of the bushing was flush against the frame flanges. Squeaked like hell and wore all the paint of the contact areas to bare metal.
