hold up and built, perform too... sounds like the auto for you, especially seeing the build you want with s/c

    Hi all.

First post so please be kind ;)

If I'm understanding the Toyota online "configurator" your choice of a manual trans vs. an automatic may come down to how you order your truck. I was totally set on a double-cab with the TRD Quick Shift kit installed but online I'm continually told that you can't have a double cab with manual trans. Access cab paired with manual trans is fine, but double is out.

Now, I haven't been to my local dealer yet to confirm this, but if it bears out then this may have impact on your decision.

I have always had manuals- I came straight from one. When I was faced with this decision I test drove a manual and liked it. But when I drove an auto I decided it was for me.

The first problem for me is that I am hard on clutches. I drive manual transmissions harder than auto's. I rev them a little higher than I should- Its fun. I figured an auto would keep me out of trouble.

The other thing I thought about is my girlfriend being able to drive it if I was too drunk, or injured from one of my reckless hobbies.

The last thing I thought about was off roading in my old m/t jeep wrangler. It was a pain for me sometimes articulating some of the more technical terrain and rock trails with a manual.

    Welcome to T world!
I agree with what you say, i looked to test an auto but there isnt one for a regcab/4cyl/4wd. Made the choice quicker.

And what lead you to the conclusion that the auto is more reliable then a stick?

people often trash a manaul/clutch due to traffic stop n go, or just being bad at a manual.
This makes the manual look like more maintaince when its not. But for the reasons above an auto would be better.
Comes down to the right tool for the job , as well as what you want

I had a 97 Tacoma with a 5 speed manual , On my '09 was looking for the auto, but not available in the 4 cycl. so I got the manual and its a much better box than the '97 tranny. First gear is a little clunky but not bad.

Why would auto be better with the S/C?

autos keep the s/c on boost, manuals wont as well. They still fun on manuals.

Sorry for sounding dumb..... What does keep it on boost mean? Are you saying there isnt as much lag time between shifting?

you know , i made an assumption on that last one. I'm thinking of turbos on diesels at work. Smackme. Not sure about the s/c with a belt.

the boost on a turbo is when its spun up and you feel the power, on autos it shift quick so you never lose it really, the manuals have to sorta spin up again. Theres more details with the waste gate , think it opens and causes the boost to go , but im not certain.

I bought my 06 and 09 tacos in the 6 speed for two reasons, the wife cant drive it and i love the control i have accelerating and decelerating. however, wheeling in the sand becomes a pain. I learned to deal with the smell of a burnt clutch...

Try em both out, but if you get the 6 speed with a CAI and a good exhaust system, you will drive just for the sound it makes going through the gears... Good Luck!

Double clutching is only used if you're older than 55. Those are the only ones that I know of that double clutch to shift. The only time I'm clutching is to start and stop. Again, autos in heavy equipment are ideal for certain applications.

I operated a street sweeper for a couple of years. It would have been a real bitch to shift and operate the controls at the same time but with the auto tranny it was limited in power. Of course manually shifting a 600hp Cat going up a grade with a load can be a driveshaft destroyer if you're not careful.

Beware that the 6spd man. trans. does have known issues.

One of them is the hub separating on the friction disk, leaving you dead in the water. This has been experience by quite a few people, and is well documented.
