Driving home the other night I noticed a wheel bearing noise when the road curved and the weight shifted to the left of the truck and that I can reproduce if i weave back and forth. Question is has anyone done a rear wheel bearing on one of these trucks?

Ive never encounter this style of rear wheel bearing in my 12 years of being a tech but then again I work at ford

I would like to discuss that as well. <g>

On my last race down to Florida I did not have a "bearing noise" - but for the last few weeks there and yesterday on the race back to NJ - I Did have some kind of noise. If I had just replaced the tires I would suspect a 'aggressive tread' issue - but these 235/75 Michelins have a street tread, have been on for 5-10K miles, and and have always been quiet.

Earlier this year I replaced the driveshaft u-joints to get rid of a vibration - one of the cups had a rusted needle - so it's not that.

The rear axle bearings appear to be grease-lube - and not oil lubed - is that accurate?

Any ideas where to start looking?

Yes they are grease-packed. Unfortunately if the oil seal on the axle starts to leak the first thing it does is dilute that grease out, which of course kills the bearing.

The bearing cost is not too expensive. The labor is... well... Toyota-class expensive. Expect at least a thousand bucks easy. The old bearing gets cut off the axle, and the new one has to be pressed on in a really big press from the end that goes into the differential.

Thank goodness they don't fail nearly as often as the fronts!

I did mine myself. Timken bearing sells for 165 you need a Toyota bearing spacer and inner seal 35? brake shoes and hardware kit if the shoes are oil soaked 50? There is a write up on the job on he forum. My local machine shop charged me 15 plus sales tax to press the new bearing onto the axle.

I have had 4 inner seals and two bearings go bad in 110,000 miles. One bearing and three seals before 60k. Only one front wheel bearing. Not impressed Toyota.

Are the axle bearings the same as the rear differential bearings? Different from wheel bearings correct

Are you sure it's the rear bearing???

I'd find a long wall (i.e. back of a store / mall) and drive and slightly swerve l/r. Do it for l then R side of the truck to the wall. Then wall acts like a sound reflector. An assistant in/out of the truck helps. Only takes a few minutes but worth the check.

    Good luck !!
