I ran two Yakima Locking Blockhead mounts in my '98 Tacoma on one trip. Why one trip? Glad you asked.

I went camping in Big Sur, CA & drove 3 hrs (160 miles) both ways to get there. My truck bed was full of camping gear, including two mountain bikes mounted to the Yakima Locking Blockhead Fork Mounts. I made sure both fork mounts were locked and secured tightly to both mountain bike forks before leaving home, and before leaving the campground.

The bikes seemed to shake around quite a bit side-to-side while driving. When we arrived home from our trip, I noticed that all the side-to-side shaking of the bikes caused the forks to wiggle in the locking mounts. This caused the paint to be rubbed off of both mountain bike front fork dropouts. Not good. I sold both yakima locking blockhead mounts later that month.

    Sadly, that is very true.

I've been lucky with all my yakima stuff. It's never come loose or rubbed any paint or scratches in the fork. I've got a carbon fork on the Cyclocross and I would never want to fuck that up. Yakima has been good for me for over 20 years so I'll stick with them. You get what you pay for.

The one's I haul on it.

I was thinking of getting a ratchet tie down (or two) to keep handy in the truck, and could use one to stabilize the bike during transport. Has anyone used these?

I paid a bit extra for mine when I bought them for that very reason. I'll gladly pay a bit more for a quality product that will last long, resell well, and function without hiccups. This is why I was pretty disappointed in the way they worked for me. I heard other stories from people who used the Yakima blockheads without ill effect. The only thing I can guess is that my '98 Tacoma had large/heavy tires and that caused extra bounce and shake in the truck bed which lead to the rubbed off paint of fork dropouts?

I'd feel wrong about discouraging the OP from the locking mounts if I didn't suggest an alternate route. So here goes. For what it's worth, I'm 100% more happy with my current method of hauling bikes. Yes, more $$$ invested, but top quality secure bike transportation, and truck bed is free to fill with camping gear.

Yeah, I agree. I've used about every option available to haul bikes around and the hitch mounted platform rack is always the best. I had a Thule T2 that was great but now I have a Kuat NV and it's like the Toyota of bike racks.

Never used the block head mount. The ones I have are the viper mounts.

My main issue with hitch mounts is the over 5k worth of bikes hanging off the back and someone rear ending me.

    Good point.

(not that I ever had that much hanging off the back of my car!)

If you get rear ended with them on the bed rail, they're probably still gonna get hit.

Not mine, but I don't have a pic to upload. I use the Thule Pad. It was $99. I use a tie-down to secure the bikes rear tire during transit. Much better than an $800 rack or having to remove/put on a front tire.

Depends on what hits you I suppose. Car... Probably won't do much damage. Truck... Maybe some damage. Semi... Bikes are the least of my worries lol

Eh my renter's policy covers my bikes in the event of theft/accident so in my case, I'm not super concerned about an accident. To be honest, I'd be more concerned about my truck frame if I was rear-ended hard. Even so, I see your point.

I used an old beat up beadspread in the same way that Citizen's picture shows to haul my bikes. They would always slide around, and my 29er's big ol' tires would always hang too low below the rear bumper for me to feel comfortable. I always thought about the rear end of the truck dipping down low in a ditch and snapping off each front wheel on each bike haha.

Works flawlessly with the stock rails, affordable and secure. Also works with 9mm, 15mm& 20mm.
