So according to your picture you mean greater than 40 degrees or a grade of somewhere between a 75 and 100% grade.

Very cool. I would love to drive from the bottom of Baja California to AK someday.

So this means that there are no "public" roads greater than those mentioned. Excellent. We all travel on many roads; city, county, state. federal, private, semi-private..........

So you have some proof you have towed 2-3000 pounds up a 40+ degree slope in a 4cyl?

My BS meter is reading pretty high.

I was impressed by the 2.7/manual combo. I love it. I drove up some of the steepest mountains in the Rockies and never had any power issues. This was towing a 5X8 uhaul with estimated 1600-1800 lbs. Just look at the pics Banff national park has some steep grades. (7 deg. +) You had to do a lot of gear rowing to make sure you were ahead of the powerband. I was timid at first doing 5-6 minutes 3rd gear pulls at 3,000rpm - but the truck did great, never missed a beat -it seems to like the high revs. Great engineering.

Now with that said, I have over 200,000 miles on this truck now mostly flat land spending the majority of it's life in Houston. This truck made two trips to Colorado and this trip out of it's now 208,000 miles life so the 2.7 was the right equipment for what I use it for which was limited mountain driving. If I did a bigger percentage of towing or mountain driving I would go with the 4.0 as I believe that is better equip. for that purpose.

I can vouch for Bill and the bearings. Good guy and ships quick.

I've been up that road in 2012 with an RV and a Honda CRV. The Tacoma sat for 10 months while we were gone. Couldn't pull it due to weight and the electronic 4 wheel drive (manual trans).

Love the pics. Bringing back memories.

Was in Anchorage at the end of September and it snowed in Haines Junction - 7 inches. Bought chains for the RV (yes chains) and worried to death about the drive. Luckily it warmed up enough to get rid of the now.

Trust me I was worried to death too on those roads when it was snowing. We stayed an extra night in Whitehorse to let the roads clear, turned out to be a good choice. I have proper tires on now and will order those wheel bearings and get an alignment and I will be better prepared for the snow.

During the snow storm, we saw an RV pull in the gas station we were waiting at and they just parked, closed the curtains and took a nap. There were no hotels in 100mi radius, I was envious.

Most everyone has studs here so I figure I would join the party. Probably could get away without them but want to be as safe as possible in the ice.

The tire guy wasn't happy about studding a set o Duratracs, he said he despises it.

Fortunately for me, that won't be necessary for 99.9% of my driving.

IMG_4187_7058947fc2c08bd413813b93b48559b963f0d083.jpg Spent two nights in WH due to snow and then on to Tok, Alaska. Staying extra night was a good idea roads MUCH better.

If I think I know where you are - did you visit the hot springs?

That is one thing we didn't do - since we are in Anchorage now we will go to Fairbanks hotsprings next spring.
