I sure do. One of the incidents that I can remember happened to a member here. Unfortunately (for him) he decided to bite the bullet and pay for the repairs himself rather then having the item warranted. Typical dealer screwing around the customer scenario.

If you would like anymore info, search around on the different Toyota/Tacoma forums. There is plenty out there, I just don't have the time to be finding them all.

URD has also acknowledged this issue and sells stronger versions of the OEM friction disk to solve this particular issue.

Thanks, does this make the tranny stronger? I still really want a manual and will do just about anything to it to make it better (stronger) but if its not worth it, I will have to let go and buy an auto:eek:

Also, lets just say that either one breaks down... which would be cheaper to fix? I have heard the manuals are cheaper easier fixes???

The friction disk is stronger in the sense that it wont break, but the tranny it self is not stronger. Although, the transmissions internals are not the cause of the problem anyways, it is the friction disk.

If you are savvy with transmission work, you could change out the friction disk your self. It is a fairly easy install. You remove the transmission, pull the pressure plate, and replace the friction disk. Then you just reinstall and you are good to go. If you pay someone to do it, labor is usually 65-90 an hour and it is about a 4 - 5 hour job. Now what it calls for in the book, I do not know. It could be longer then what I stated.

Also, does anyone have dyno numbers for each? There are claims on both sides of more torque to the wheels.....?

Anybody have many more issues other than the friction plate? Or is this the main problem with the manuals?

MR Capps, you've already got it made up in your mind that you are getting a manual tranny. No matter what anyone posts on here, you keep grabbing for reasons to get the manual and not the auto. Just go buy your truck. This thread is pointless.:smash:

We have both a Peterbilt and a Freightliner with auto SHIFT trannys. They are not conventional autos, they still have a clutch pedal that is used to start and stop. Once you get going, the transmission runs through all ten gears by itself. Sounds just like your shifting them. They both have buttons to select forward/reverse/neutral, and you can hold any gear you want. The Freightliner even has a paddle shifter! They both have jake brakes, and they work the same as any other rig. You can downshift it yourself or the truck will do it when you let off the throttle. We also have a few smaller Internationals with conventional autos. These are smaller "big trucks" that usually have seven speed manuals with no splitter.

The auto in the Taco has a lock up torque converter, so you still get engine braking when towing, along with the torque multiplication of the converter when accelerating. Also, any decent sized trailer should have it's own braking system, be it via an electric controller or the hydraulic systems found on bigger boat trailers.

    Too few to list.
I have a 6speed and it was actually harder to find a 6speed in what I wanted at the time I purchased my truck but I prefer it. All a matter of preferrence. It's only bothersome when in traffic which I don't often hit. I've driven both. My suggestion is go to a dealership and test drive.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
This thread has been hammered around before, again its a personal preference thing. Lots more auto's around to choose from in a dealership, they don't have to go looking for a standard as my dealer did or said he did !
I just like to shift of course, in the city or congestion around a city its bothersome. Used to be better mileage with a stick, but everyone says that is not the case anymore, there probably right. I think a stick is better in the snow than a auto, again personal preference.
A standard trans should last 200K in itself, how long does an auto last , not sure perhaps we should have a thread on that. Given decent treatment and on the button fluid changes it should last a long time.
Given decent treatment with a clutch I would say 150K on a guess.
Probably a auto would get your more on a trade in, I think.

Not completely true! You are kinda right though! I REALLY do want a manual but I am listening to people on here!!! I just think that if the main problem with the manual can be fixed, then I would go that way..... If not, I am not totally against an automatic. I don't think this thread is pointless if its helping me spend $30,000!!!

Probably the best advice is drive both and make a decision. My local dealers really did not have much in stick choices. I had to drive 30 miles to find one who had a 6spd and V6, of course this was late Oct and they had left overs and were just getting new ones in .....
I found the left over(made in Jan 06/bought it on Oct 20th) in a dealer that seemed to get all the left overs, as he had no new trucks of any kind at all.
