How the Amish afford that nice lumber I have no idea.

 

They don't pay taxes.

 

Maybe you could get Samson the draft horse as a rental car in the meantime also.

 

Not sure if you'd know, but seems like the entertainment industry often depicts Amish families as chest high in debt. Is that accurate? I would think their lifestyle has a more built in system of self reliance. Though the land and homes needs to be paid for. Any insight?

 

Most if what is depicted is probably exaggerated. They actually do pay property tax and income tax. I believe they don't pay into social security or Medicare though. You have to remember that these family farms have been there for generations and have long been paid for.

 

I meant for new construction or new land purchasing. Are there properties that large that they don't really need to acquire more land? I suppose only 3-4 generations are living simultaneously so maybe that footprint is somewhat small.

 

A guy I used to work with nailed a cow one night that got loose from an Amish barnyard and demolished his ratty old Eclipse.

The farmer and he went to the Mitsubishi dealer, and the Amish guy told him to pick out what ever he wanted, and wrote a check.

 

That, and no expensive toys/habits.

The Amish farm land is actually disappearing around here. Every year I see a field lost and another housing development built, kinda sad.

Guy behind my parents had them frame out a house he was building. Never seen a house framed up so quick.
