I have a 2002 tacoma 4x4 double-cab, had tires put on it and noticed the brake pads are paper thin. I never heard any kind of indication that they were so close to getting to the rotors. Are there indicators on this model, and if so what type?

Indicators are on the pads themselves, not on the truck.

How do people know when to change them?

Like said above, they would be on the pads. It's a small metal piece that's parallel with the pad and when the pad wears the metal piece touches the rotor, causing a squeal.

No, mechanic showed me when he was changing tires, they are really thin. That's my point, I never heard the squealing. This answers my question, I was curious because I never heard anything.

I've had squealers never make a sound when pads are low before. I don't trust a squealer. If I know I'm getting up there in miles on them, I take a look.
