once you go synthetic can you ever go back

    I have heard talk over the years that once you change to synthetic you have to stay with it. I don't see why. I can understand that if you have an older vehicle your seals will be worn so you can't switch to synthetic with high mileage or an old vehicle. If you start new with syn. then can you switch back in later years. Just wanting to pic yalls brains.

    When synthetic first came out it was formulated in such a way that if you used it, you had to keep using it. If I remember correctly, its chemical composition would effect the seals in such a way that if you put it in and then took it out the seals would crack and dry up. But they have gotten better at making synthetic in the last five years or so.

    I've never seen any proof that that is the case. If there's a scientific test that some how proves this, I'd be surprised. But, you can go to bobistheoilguy.com and peruse their forums. Tons of info there.

    Thanks guys I hang around with alot of much older guys ang hot rodders and they aren't nearly as right as they think they are. I never really thought much of it but wanted to see what some of yall thought. Thanks

    also, how do they make those semi-synthetic oils....i think that right there definitely answers your question...!

    You can mix synth and normal oil.. They are interchangeable and mixable.

    Thats the rumors. I wouldn't recommend going back from syn to regular dino oil.
