Anything welding

I had to discipline myself to wear one, now it's almost second nature. Plasma cutting and grinding in a small shop like mine makes a lot of nasty particulate..

 

I wear one for grinding. Blowing black snot out your nose is pretty gross.

 

Making some progress on the hotrod build. Sorta. The customer keeps dropping off more parts to weld on.
I had to fill 37 random holes in the firewall, since none of them will be needed. I made my roommate fill some of them though.



The frame is boxed and ready for the crossmember and Zee section.

We just built a new table out of c channel and 1.5 tube in a sort of grid, downdraft table for grinding/finishing.

 

This was one of mine with a flux core .030 set up before I got my new set up.

 

I plan on welding MIG from the start so I"LL make some ugly welds but that will be some art welding for me for my firsts welder

Thats a good deal but not many people on here will have a use for .060 wall mild steel.

You would have to brace the hell out of it but it would work. One thing your are not going to want to start welding on .060 wall tube you need get some torch time and develop a technique before trying thin wall tubing. Stick to .120 wall and above wile your just starting you will waste a lot of tube trying to learn to weld on thin wall.

 

So its better to start on some plates

 

I think its better to start by watching hours of videos and reading books to learn what needs to be done before ever picking up a torch. I would start by watching welding tips and tricks all of the mig welding videos.

 

God, yes! Having all these videos at your disposal with really help with the speed of becoming a proficient welder. Something I did not have luxury of.

 

I had to whip this out last week. Buddy of mine wanted a second boat trailer to leave downstream.

McKenzie drift boat trailer. We like to leave a second truck and trailer downstream so we can just drift down to the next boat launch, load up and get gone. Saves a bunch of running around after a day of trout fishing.

Nahhh.. Don't listen to these guys, they're all idiots.

A really good starter project is a trailer like KO's. The tongue is a great place to make sure that you've got your heat correct on your machine. Best if you're outside on a windy day so the fumes don't get to you.

 

Those McKenzie boats are gorgeous. Kicking around the idea of building another skiff - built an 18 foot flat bottom when I was 17, it's still back in Rhode Island.

Have contemplated trying an aluminum build, but as all things that are worth doing, it would take a lot of time.

 

Please do it! Have you seen what those AL, MDB's are selling for? There is no way there is 5k in materials in those boats.
