Looks great! I wonder what the stars look like in that area? Be cool with a star or MW background too.

Thanks Monte and great idea Ian! Too bad that windmill is 6 hours from my house and on private land... Was out looking for section corners to shoot in for work and brought my camera on the hike since the sun was going down! Sometimes my job really rocks when I get to see stuff like this.

    Are you a surveyor?

The private land part sucks. Maybe there's something closer to you?

    Opinion time.

    6D vs a7(r or s or plain a7)

    Mirrorless vs DSLR.

    Go!

I hear such good things about the a7. Kinda hard not to at least consider it.

Really though they are pretty similar as far as features go aren't they? I really enjoy the size of my a6. And you can always get a lens adapter for your existing Canon lenses.

My votes for DSLR (6D). I'm just not into the whole Mirrorless bandwagon movement. Call me old skool but a camera has a mirror and makes cool sounds when you press the shutter button. To me the sound and feel of the camera is just as important as the composition and subject. I know Chaz likes the Mirrorless due to it being quiet and people don't hear if you take their pictures for street candids. I like seeing what I'm shooting throughout the camera. :crapstorm:

    First as only shooter, yes.

a7s all day. In all honestly you have to decide what tool is right depending on the job, not the tool. Mirrorless cameras suck for tracking high speed subjects. If you shoot sports and wildlife get a DSLR. But people do underestimate what the mirrorless cameras can do. I prefer Fuji because the lenses are gorgeous and the IQ isn't daunted by much in APS class. It rival more full frame cameras in a lot of areas. AF is slow in comparison to a pro DSLR but not as "horrific" as people try to make it out to be. Just a hair slower than my D7100 was. However it nails whatever you do get in focus. If you like shooting all manual film cameras you'd like mirrorless bodies like the Sony a7s, Fuji X anything or even Oly m43. Oly has some of the best features and lenses period but that smaller sensor is their handicap.

a7 has a Full Frame sensor. But in all honesty, other than that, it's not that impressive (to me). It seems that FF sensor make it okay that they have hardly any native lenses at all and the thing is slow, loud, etc. Don't get me wrong, if I had unlimited dough I'd get an a7s tomorrow, but I don't so it became not even an option for me, simply because it has hardly any lenses, lenses for FF are bigger and negate the size advantage, and I didn't like it's quirks (personal preference).

Size is a great advantage, especially for guys who hike their gear into remote places and want to really shave weight, but even for day to day carry.

For me, there are many more advantages technology wise. Mirrorless cameras aren't leaving DSLR's behind in some areas, but in other they are innovating new technology that the same old DSLR bodies aren't.

I actually do miss that mirror slap once in a while haha Also if you like an OVF I have two things for ya. One, Fuji's X100T and whenever their new X-Pro2 comes out should have an OVF. Also, you haven't seen the EVF in the X-T1. I kid you not, I didn't like EVFs until I saw this thing. It's very nice to say the least. haha

At the end of the day it REALLY does come down to which tool works for whatever job. There are a few things about DSLRs that I miss and about 99 that I most definitely do not. I guess that means the switch was good for me. Some, depending on your style and what you shoot, would regret the switch. All personal preference. All I know is Fuji glass is beautiful and I like the external dials and ergos/controls of their bodies (not to mention the sensor, which is love hate, but I like a lot) so that's what I shoot. I wouldn't have switched if I shot more sports but I don't care at all about games with inflatable balls and imaginary points ;)

    Sweet!

I have always admired wedding shooters since there's so much that needs to get done both before the event and during the event. Long days, hard work.

    Good luck to you.

Thank you! I've always wanted to shoot one solo and this is the perfect opportunity. Thing is they are doing this small and couldn't afford a photog but I'm not going into it like that. I'm going into it as if this was a high paying client and I had to deliver ha here's to hoping I don't miss any special moments  ha

    Great input guys!

Chaz you made all the right points that i've been wrestling with. I shoot all kinds of stuff so there is no clear answer for me. The sensor in the a7s is really intriguing me. but like you said lens selection for the sony's just sucks, what like 5 total!? wth. and to boot 3 of them are zeiss...$$$$

The ability for the mirrorless to track focus well may be the dealbreaker for me. I've also seen that the EVF is a bit laggy when tracking an object on the a7.

The low light performance of the a7s is just nuts though and what first peaked my interest in mirrorless alongside the compact and unassuming factor it has. It'd be nice to walk around with a camera that people dont associate with serious photographers...not yet anyways.

As for the lens adapter side of things. I've read really good things about the Metabones adapters for the sony's but that's another like 400$ and even then it seems the autofocus isn't the same as an actual E-mount lens.

Lots to ponder as I'm looking to maybe make the jump to FF before my trip to chile this december to shoot my sister-in-laws wedding and do a bit of traveling to the south of chile. I held a 6d 24-105 combo last weekend and wasn't psyched on it for hauling around traveling like that, even the 60d can be a chore to lug around. Sacrifices right!?
