Looking for help

Hey gang......I'm looking to upgrade my sound system on a shoestring and wonder if those with the skilz can help me out.

A buddy from work has a set of speakers that I can get for about $40.They are Pioneer TS-G650M and the specs are as follows...

16cm coaxial 3 way
180w max
4 ohm
35w nom.impedance

May as well be written in Cantonese for all I know about this stuff.

I also have had laying around the garage a small Kenwood KAC-424 amp

My questions are these....Can I use the speakers in my DC,and would there be any advantages to installing the amp.As I said,cash is tight for this project and I would like to attempt the install myself and I'm keeping the stock 6-cd HU for now.I have read a number of threads in the A/V section including Mavericks excellent walk-through.

My thought is that the speakers would be used in the back doors and I guess I need baffles or spacers and adapters for going from truck to speaker?I'm also open to suggestions on speakers to buy for the other doors that would compliment these.

if you want to keep the stock hu, I would just install those in the rear doors replacing the stockers. yeah, you'll need to make/buy a baffle. I just made one out of 1/2" mdf using a jig saw. then I just cut off the stock wire terminals and replaced them with spade terminals. That won't cost much...a few bucks for mdf and terminals. oh, you'll need 6 lag screws that are longer to make up for the mdf width.

It's not gonna be the greatest improvement, but for the cost of nearly free, not bad.

You can replace the fronts with some cheap 6x9s or 6.5s...On my last truck I bought some blaupunkt 6x9s for like 50 bucks at fry's. pretty cheap, and they sounded good. This time around i went for kenwood 6x9s. They cost 90 bucks but sounded the best to me at the time. Just go to a store like fry's and see what sounds best to you for the money. I'd save the amp for the speakers that you buy...if you buy any. If that amp doesn't have high level inputs (speaker wire inputs instead of rca inputs) you'll need a line out converter. Do a search for that, been a few threads recently.

shit. i just reread your post. for $40 bucks you may as well go buy new speakers instead. You may want to buy online.

 

Thanks alot JayAre....I wondered about scrimping on the used speakers as well....I'm frugal but I don't want to have to do this more than once.The more I think about it,the more I think you are right....I'm going to get 4 new speakers put in and allow for upgrades in stages.

 

yeah, it's just that you can get comparable speakers brand new for around that cost. Take a look at this Fry's link...granted they aren't the best place for car audio, and some of these speakers aren't the greatest quality, but I have always been okay with the 50-100$ speakers I've bought.

Don't bother with rear speakers. I'm faded all the way forward and don't notice a drawback. If you need speakers for the rear passengers, tell them they can pay to replace the stocks, cuz it's not bothering you.

$40 is a bit much, that's the problem with trying to sell used car audio. Nothing wrong with the stuff, but it's no longer worth anything. I would suggest new pioneer, alpine, or kenwood simply because of cost, they are reliable, and the ability to easily compare them (nearly all stores are going to carry all three, so you can one stop shop - less gas driving around). Not necessarily a concert speaker, but good for a budget.

as said, you need baffles. Build them or talk to Marv. Marv's were something like $40 I thought, but I could be completely off.

Say no to the amp. People forget that the amp itself is only the first buying step. There's a good chunk of money you need to spend on wires. Plan on $25-$50 for a kit.

 

Get some subs later on. That's what I recommend.

 

good point...I usually have mine faded all the way forward too. After reading threads on here about it sounding better, I tried it, and it does. I have the AC and two subs back there though, don't know if it's different on DC's.
