Quick scenario: Loaned my brother my truck for a a few years. Told him to keep up on the regular maintenance, he didn't. The truck now has 160k miles on it. The transmission was replaced due to a factory defect at 40k miles......so the tranny has approx. 120k miles on the same fluid. Same for the differential fluid as well.

I found out nothing had been changed and told him to go immediately to a shop and get it flushed and filled. He called a shop and they said they wouldn't change tranny fluid that old. They said the truck would be sure to start leaking and probably begin slipping within 20k miles or so.

I asked a few of my mechanic buddies and they said the same thing. for some reason I have never heard of this before. Is this true or does Toyota have a different procedure/schedule for tranny fluid? Can I just do a drain and fill rather than a flush? My buddies told me to just leave it alone.

Drain and Fill would be a good thing. Bad oil is always BAD for a vehicle. Doing a drain and fill isnt gonna replace all the fluid, so, do a drain and fill, give it a week, and do it again.
    Welcome to TW! :)

What Chris said. I have never heard of what you are bieng told (leaking). Perhaps you could call around and see if other shops say the same thing?

A small one. You need to fill via the dip stick tube.

one thing you have to think about with transmission fluid that hasnt been changed in that length of time.....sometimes, not in all cases, but sometimes, draining the old fluid and putting new fluid in may cause the tranny to slip gears some, until its mixed with the rest of the old oil. doing a flush when it has gone this long can potentially burn the tranny up, cause its used to the old fluid with all the metals in it, and removing them can clean the gears and valve body and such too much. just a heads up.

A funnel is definitely a good thing. Find one that will fit in the tube and still allow you to get the ATF jug in there.

well man, with 120k miles, myself.....i'd be kinda hesitant about it, but then again, the toyota trannys are built alot better than most dodge and chevy trannys,as well as fords too, do it MAY be ok to do.

This is essentially what I was told by a few people. and some of them acted like it was a sure thing it was going to happen........so TM06, do you think 2 drain and fills would be OK. Or would I still experience the same problems as if I flushed it with a machine??

honestly man....i have seen quite a few transmissions slip like hell and then lose all the gears after their fluid was changed....moreso when it was flushed, but i have seen it a couple times when it was just a drain/refill. its totally your call, but i'd hate totell you nothing would happen then your tranny go out.

Will...Thats why I suggested to drain and fill first. That will only replace a few quarts, then do it again. Thing is, if nothing is done, the tranny life is being compromised.

on the phone with him now........and i agree also. as long as he doesnt flush the system, and does a couple of drain/refills....first one drop the pan and clean the pan and filter also,he should be good to go.
