If I'm in the market to steal a vehicle, I am going to carry a bag of goodies to help me steal it. I wouldn't be doing it ghetto style. But that's just the way I think; however, I am not of the mind to commit gta. :)

My thinking is not much I can do to deter a committed car thief. What I can do is deter a thief looking for easy scores on crap in plain sight.

I've been a victim of lowly thieves on my cars twice in the past 25 years or so:

Once at the tender age of 18 I had some awesome leather jackets sitting in the front seat of my '71 Ford LTD. That thing was epic - puke green, the size of an aircraft carrier, 400 engine, PLY tires, and only had like 40k on it when I got it around 1991 from my grandma, who got it from her way aging mom. Wish I still had that beast. Some dick broke in to steal those jackets. Taught me to never leave valuable things in plain sight.

A few years later a serial crook was popping lock cylinders on cars, going after stereos and CDs and whatever they could grab inside the car. Not much I could do there on my Civic, but learned the hard way that the insurance company could care less about what's IN the car, only whats ON the car. That was back in the day when you had to haul around a hundred CDs in your ride if you wanted to listen to a variety of music, so I lost a good amount of dough on that one. So yeah, never had a car stolen, just stuff.

    Lock the steering wheel.
    Put the t-case in neutral.
    Pull the EFI fuse.

    I'm interested in doing a kill-switch though.

That's a nice-looking truck. A bit high for me, but that height would have saved me a8 8-inch dent underneath the door when I did the Mengel Pass (in Death Valley) last year.

Your trailer hitch appears low enough to scrape dimes off the pavement. I wonder if anybody makes something that fits on the trailer's tongue that would serve the same purpose...

Soo, what about a kill-switch? Or an applicable write up to one?

Aside from the trunk monkey, the idea is to not be the easiest car to steal in the area. The point is to make that other guy's car more attractive to steal than yours. Don't leave stuff on the floor that looks valuable.
As others have said, a pro, or even a fumbling idiot can steal just about any car, given enough time. Years ago someone tried to steal my civic from my driveway and failed. But in the process bent the steering column and messed up the wiring. Was over a grand to fix. I wish they WOULD HAVE stolen it, would have made the insurance claim easier.

In the end, it's impossible to prevent a theaft.

Just insure the thing properly. Best and only 100% true theft coverage you can get.

I live in a high theft area and have done research into this. The whole point is to create layers of security making it difficult to steal. My current thought of a reasonable system is an alarm and a kill switch. The alarm is for the snatch and grab thieves. The kill switch is to delay the truck thief. There's different ways of implementing a kill switch, and can even require two or more actions to be taken in order to start the vehicle.

Another more expensive route is to install a Revelco device which requires a multi-pin "key" to start the vehicle. They claim 100% deterrence. However, none of this will stop a determined thief with a flatbed.

I often have to leave my truck in shady places for work. I remove anything of value (even loose change) that can be seen, lock the steering wheel, put the t case in neutral and leave the e brake on. I have even disconnected the battery a couple of times. Might be overkill but it's worked so far.

I havent got around to a kill switch yet, but whenever I have to leave my car/truck in a bad spot, I always take the plug wires or at least disconnect them. Hard to steal something you can't start unless you have a flat bed.

    Vice grips and I'm good.

For those who doubt those being carried.......... If I spotted a nice potential ride and the steering wheel was gone, I'd just come back tomorrow. With 2 pair of vice grips.

Thieves are thieves, but not all thieves are stupid.

i have an 02 double cab and i recommend somehow putting a lock on the sliding back glass.
Ive had to break into my truck a few times and am surprised how easy it is to get in thru that window

As i dont want to write a "how to" for break into a tacoma, ill simply say that it is very easy to open the sliding window with a chisel without damaging the glass at all.
